Have always been a charcoal guy-gas cooking tips?

I've always been a charcoal guy and smoked a ton of stuff. My big smoker is very time consuming and takes a while to be able to utilize on weeknights after work.
So, I broke down and bought this during my lunch break and will be putting it together tonight or tomorrow. I figured I could still grill quickly after work.
Any tips or suggestions? What should I do differently than I'm used to with charcoal/smoking?

I kind of have a feeling I'm not going to enjoy it. But, I would prefer grilling some chicken vs baking it when I get home. And with the later daylight coming up I will more than likely be wanting to be hang out outside anyways.
It was an impulse that I kind of talked myself into this morning. I figured what the hell, it's only a few hundred bucks.

I have both an offset smoker and a gas grill. Two tools for totally different uses for me. The smoker basically does all large/slow jobs. Gas grill does anything that takes under 30 minutes to cook. Things like: steaks, chicken breasts, duck bombs, burgers, grilled veggies, etc.
Whole chicken or even quarters could go either way. Just depends on mood, weather and how much time I have.

Get out of my brain! That was exactly my thought process for buying this.
I'm just wondering what I need to know that may be different. I'm guessing I'll need to watch stuff on the gas grill a lot more closely?

I don't think gas is as hot as charcoal. But the heat is probably more even and consistent.
You might get an extra tank to have on hand so you always have one full?

Through years of crawfish boils, fish fry's and such I have accumulated around 8 tanks so I'm good in that department Lots of "oh shite" moments when the tank runs out and had to run to the corner store and buy an overpriced one.

I've heard this as well. I guess I will be experimenting a lot this weekend!

Buy one of those little cast iron boxes to put wood chips in. It sits on the grill and provides some smoke.

Yep. And put you a water pan in there. I've got that exact same gas grill. It's hooked up to a natural gas spigot on the back patio. Damn handy device. It doesn't take the place of my big charcoal pit, but I don't want it too. It's perfect for throwing stuff on on a random week night.

Well that makes me feel better. Have you had any problems with it? I have a natural gas hookup on the patio but not where I want to put the grill. Maybe I can just run the line over to where I want it. But then again, I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble.

After 20 years of grilling with charcoal, my father in law bought me a gas grill this past Christmas. I just hanged the first bottle of propane after at least 15 cookings. I would have been through 10 bags of charcoal by now. I'm hooked on it.

I got a cheap one from Lowes, that is a gas grill on one side and a charcoal grill on the other. Added a smoke box to the charcoal side and it does everything.
Though inspired by a food board poaster, I've decided to make a smokehouse from some appliance parts I have. I just bought a non working tall SS commercial fridge that could become a great smoker.

Burgers, steaks, sausage, and pan searing fish outside on the burner attachment. That's about all I find mine is good at. IMO, chicken stinks as does smoking anything. I have a gas smoker that does the trick there. I still wouldn't give up on charcoal If I were you. Nothing I like better than chicken over charcoal. It just isn't the same without it. I still find it difficult to regulate my heat properly for brisket, or chicken.

Smoke box or other similar thing. I even put chunks on and use direct fire from that for beef.
I got this cool thing from Home Depot that fits over a burner and lets you put wood on it while protecting the burner.

Go back to charcoal.
I've never left charcoal/smoking. I got the gas one for quick meals after work when I don't have hours needed to smoke something.
This weekend I learned that it is VERY different than what I'm used to. I broke it in with some steaks, veggies and garlic bread. Burnt the hell out of the bread. Veggies and steaks came out great though. Then yesterday I did some shrimp along with some veggie kabobs. I burnt the heck out the veggies on the kabobs. I think I need to put some things over a "dead" burner and let the neighboring burner provide some heat, but not directly under the food.
It was quite a blow to the ego to burn stuff as I can't remember the last time I've overcooked anything on my smoker.
I was really surprised how good the steaks came out on Sat though and it was so easy/fast to cook them.
