Sounds like he needs to go smoke pot with Ricky Williams until his money runs out.
I bet he'd find his love for soccer again real quick.
That said, I have little issue with Landon moving on. Yes, I'd prefer to have him on the team, as he's still our biggest(?) difference maker.
He's given 10-12 years pretty much non-stop to the growth of US Soccer and MLS and that often goes under appreciated by both fans and media. He's been the bell cow and the poster boy for soccer here for a decade. If he's tired of it, he's tired of it.

I agree his is entitled to take time off. I was encouraged about his saying he would come back to the USMNT if asked. If he comes back in June that will be about a year away from the USMNT. Hopefully that is long enough to stoke his fire again.
Especially with our wing play lacking, he is needed sooner rather than later.

Agreed. At the same time, though... He's 31. He's not going to be able to play out there forever. (Of course, I say that and Ryan Giggs is still trucking along on the wing...) Perhaps it's not *realistic* to expect him to have more than a couple of years of international play left on the wing.
If there's ever any inclination that we want to even use width on the field (I certainly haven't seen it), then now is a good time to find players who can do that going forward.

Yeah but unless something drastically changes I see him as our best option out wide for 2014. After that I'm more comfortable with finding new options out there.

What's sad is that our two most dynamic wings are Cakes and run DMB

Agreed.

Agreed, sort of. DMB is a maybe. I still hate Klinsmann for how he doesn't call in our wing options and instead plays slow CMs out wide.

It just pisses me off that those guys have been through 3 WC cycles and we still have no promising heir to them.

I'd rather not talk about Landy Cakes.

If soccer isn't a big part of him he doesn't need to be part of te usmnt picture. I appreciate all he's done for the program but if you aren't in 100% you aren't in the right frame of mind to contribute to the team.
What the shite is he doing in Cambodia anyway?

He's going smoke pot and talk about helping people.

If he ever gets his shite together Brek Shea could be special for us at Left winger, I'm still optimistic that Gatt can develop into something above average at RW also.
Noob question alert: ok, haven't asked a noob question in a while but we have seen Jurgy's stubbornness to use wings and have wide play..I thought getting the ball wide to work in or swing in on a cross was a template for good soccer? Are there any notable teams who have success without wide play? TIA

It's more than just swinging in crosses. If you play wide you stretch out the defense and create more space for passes and runs

I think this is just part of him being burned out at the moment. Go circumcise Cambodian children, smoke some good kind bud, get your mind in the right place and come back to the team.

Right, I get that, I just didn't know if there were any advantages or distinct playing styles where teams don't utilize width and can pack the MF full of players like what we've been doing...
I'm just trying to gauge what direction Jurgy is headed with the USMNT style of play...

You will see the tiki-taka in the MF from the likes of Spain and Barcelona where they make quick controlled passes in tight spaces. I think it's Ian Darke that calls it "football in a phonebooth". We dont have near the skill to do that though (not many do). And even then, those teams will still have width to make it easier to do that.

Well, Barcelona likes to work it down the middle but their backs do a great job of overlapping, which ours seems to struggle to do.

quote:Gotcha, thank you. In your opinion, if we had our optimum lineup on the field(whatever your definition of that is) how would you have the USMNT playing? Didn't Jurgy promise us "free flowing, attacking" football?
