My dad and bought a pair of each of these at Martin's. Is this stuff as good as the ratings say? Some of the best beer you can buy in the US?
Just popped open the 6 and it is damn good.
eta: That beer was one of the best I have ever tried. Can't wait for 8 & 10

Yes, all 3 are excellent representatives of their style of beer.

The 10 is really good. I'm a big fan of all 3.

I will try a Trappist every now and then. 10 is a bit much for me. You start tasting the alcohol. Then to me you are drinking wine.
Different style but had a Saint Arnold No. 1
It is a dark but was a limited release batch the alcohol pushed away alot of the taste. and there was a LOT of tastes to push away.

reason I ask is that I have one that I am holding until I can get a handful of Trappist beers to try. I'm not a big Belgian beer guy either, but I haven't explored them very much, so hoping this might turn me onto them

Westy 12 was great, but it didnt really change my opinion of belgians. I'll choose an American style 95% of the time still.

All three are superb, the 8 and 10 being the best. Dont be alarmed by the sediment in the 10...

Stop being selfish, your drain might like the others.

Belgians are an acquired taste just like IPAs. I would ease into belgians with Leffe Blonde and Saison Dupont. These are lighter beers but with the distinctive belgian sweetness and yeastiness. If you don't like these, don't waste your money on the more expensive and complex trappist belgians. I would rank the top 6 Trappist belgian as follows:
1. Westy 12
2. St. Bernardus Christmas Ale
3. Westmalle Dubbel
4. Westy 8
5. Rocherfort 10
6. Orval
1. Westy 12
2. St. Bernardus Christmas Ale
3. Westmalle Dubbel
4. Westy 8
5. Rocherfort 10
6. Orval
