He wants to be a pro basketball player. Let him be a pro basketball player without the charade of college delaying it. Unfortunately, that was not an easy option.
If this injury compromises Noel’s draft status, it’s on David Stern and his league’s minimum age requirement.
The rule is bogus, but not for this reason. The NBA needs to change it to either the MLB or NFL rule. What's a joke is you have kids going to college, who don't even go to class spring semester their freshman year because they know they're leaving.
Guys get hurt and miss out on money. It happens.

This.
While I don't like that colleges basically use players for millions in football with the promise of a "free education" - that's a different story between the colleges and the athlete and potential compensation.
The NFL and NBA can decide how old you have to be before entering their leagues and what qualifications you need to have just like any business/organization in America for profit.
You could be some whiz kid in the past but most top companies required you to get an MBA - you can be a genius at the law and smart enough to pass the Bar exam from home but almost everywhere states require you to first earn a JD from a law school approved by that state before taking the exam.

You could also write plenty of articles about players who turned down college scholarships to got straight to the NBA and never made a roster.
you could write plenty of articles, but there wouldn't be that many examples.

Forde is reaching big time (shocker). You could have a 3-4 year guy go out and have the same injury with similar consequences.
And the whole "bastardization of college athletics" is even more laughable when you consider how many athletes don't graduate and just coast until their eligibility is up. It stopped being about the classroom a long time before the one and done rule.

Brandon Jennings went overseas and got paid instead of going to college. No one stopped Nerlens from doing the same thing.
Probably better competition and development over in Europe as well. Really fundamental basketball is played over there and better competition makes you a better player. If I was the consensus #1 player in the country in HS I would play in Italy or Spain for a year, get a ton of hot euro pussy, make millions, then come back to the US and play in the NBA.

Not even close. The NBA is a PRIVATE business. They can have final say on whom is eligible to be hired. If an athlete wants to be paid for a year, he has other options than the NBA.
ETA: The rule is for the betterment of the league. Which is all the league cares about.

NBA definitely needs to go the MLB route.
You can jump to the NBA out of high school, but if you go to college you stay 2 years.
And there's plenty of high school kids that went straight to the NBA and flopped. There's more Martell Webster's than Kobe/KG/Lebron

It needs to be go pro straight out of high school or go to college and be required to stay 3 years.

Did he write the same kind of article about Marcus Lattimore? How about college baseball players that go through Tommy John surgery and it messes their career up?
I believe that the concerns about physicallity and if the body is ready for the nfl after highschool (or one or two years after) are a legitmate concern to prevent kids from jumping to the nfl too soon.
As for baseball, well going to college is a choice for baseball, you can go straight from middle school if you were good enough. So the college baseball analogy holds no water. Like baseball, i do not think there is a physicallity disparity to justify keeping a kid from going straight to the NBA.

Sounds like America should just eliminate High School and College Sports. go pro at 12 years old

While I like that, it would just go back to the old ways before the rule was implemented. With baseball, before their new draft rules were implemented last year, if they failed to sign a draft pick, they were given a compensatory pick of the same round value. Now they don't receive a compensatory pick if they miss out on a high school or college kid so it somewhat changes things.
However, the NBA could never go the compensatory pick route with only two rounds, so kids would just be making the same choice that they were having to make back then

Ziller on this. Much more coherent and actually blames the right person

Under Billy Hunter, the National Basketball Players Association has let any number of non-financial matters skate by as David Stern's insistence. One of those is the age minimum, which prevents players from jumping straight from high school to the league
quote:
There is no player benefit to the age minimum. At the time, there was a small, ridiculous argument that players should support an age minimum because it would leave more jobs and salary for veteran players. That applied to players for only the first year of the program -- now, it has evened out. Now 19-year-olds are getting the roster spots and salary slots that 18-year-olds used to get.
quote:
The players' union doesn't represent high school or college players, but it's foolish to ignore the fact that the best high school and college players will be NBA players' union members. The union should be protecting them like it protects its own. But that would require the union actually doing some protecting, period.

Should be like baseball....Go pro out of high school or go to school for 2-3 years.
But what Forde doesnt talk about is how athletes like this...future top 10 picks from high school, get insurance on themselves. I will guess he has at least a million dollar insurance policy on himself. Not saying that this takes the place of being a top pick, but at least he wont starve.

Before the draft the nba grades players. Why not have a grade where they have to had to go pro out of high school?
Posted on 2/13/13 at 1:18 pm to VegasPro
Can players play a year in the D-league straight out of high school or would they have to go overseas if they wanted to get paid immediately? If not, I think that's a compromise the NBA could make.

It's not like anybody would forced to draft him straight out of high school.
