Yea I think so too. I think this would be a good idea for the NBA. It can be a win-win for the NBA and those players. The players are able to get paid right away and get a nice transition into the NBA lifestyle. And this would generate much more fan interest in the D-league which means more money for the NBA.

That is a great idea. They should just do the Brandon Jennings scenario. Go Travel see another part of the world get some culture. get paid, and learn some fundamentals

Or maybe Pat should go read Jonathan Abrams article on GrantLand about Shaun Livingston, where his high school coach said that Livingston would've benefited going to Duke for at least a year to get stronger before taking on the rigors of an 82-game NBA schedule.

i'm sure that high school coach is an expert on professional S/C

You could also write plenty of articles about players who turned down college scholarships to got straight to the NBA and never made a roster.

there honestly were not that many stories of legit players who were eligible who didn't make a roster

I think college at least allows the kids an opportunity to grow up a little bit before going to the league. Look at guys like James, Howard, Bynum, Bryant, and Garnett. To an varying degrees, they're all emotionally stunted and some of them act like they're still in high school.

College allows for a more gradual release into the real world. Or as real a world as NBA player inhabit.

Brandon Jennings even said that going the Europe route isn't for everyone. I think I remember him saying he did not really play a whole lot and it was very humbling. Dong get me wrong, the Europe route can work for the right player, but I think players would rather the college lifestyle for a year instead.

The D-league idea wouldn't change that either. But it would silence all the Pat Forde's on this issue. The players would've had a shot to stay in America, get paid to play basketball and play in a league that plenty of NBA scouts have easy access to. After that, there's no reason someone can blame the NBA for a player that hurt himself playing a year in college.

I agree and this wouldn't necessarily result in all the one and done players switching to the D league route. But with this the NBA can say they gave these players a fair opportunity to get paid out of high school.

:omg:

and for the record, the main reason the NBA instituted this rule was free marketing, not development

secondly, a "baseball" rule would just leave EVERYbody going pro. CBB would be fuuuuuuuucked

Percentage wise, much great number of HS guys. But yeah, Ron Artest, Gilbert Arenas, etc still exist. And of course the Vaseline Machine Starbury.

He's on the lower end of the spectrum, that's why I said 'to varying degrees'. Kobe's got issues beyond his competitiveness.

I said it 'allows the opportunity'. Not everyone takes advantage of the opportunity that is given to them.

You don't think the one and done rule has anything to do with the era of huge high school busts costing nba teams millions and lowering the quality of basketball played?
