great Arsenal dig here
quote:
Germans had genuine respect for the Arsenal of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Marc Overmars, but as soon as Lukas Podolski moved there, some people began to doubt how good they can be. While he is a talented player, the Arsenal of old would never have looked at him, and his arrival is seen as a sign they are no longer a true superpower.

the intro to the French part is just depressing
quote:
Despite Paris Saint-Germain's rapid rise to riches in the wake of a 2011 Qatari takeover, Blumenfeld said the league itself remains virtually unchanged: "Ligue 1 is renowned for its lack of fan passion. Football is just not such a big part of French culture. Those who call themselves die-hard fans are few in number and are mostly lower-class members of society. Women and families certainly don't fill our stadiums."

Blumenfeld derives a modicum of pleasure from the fact that the rise in the Premier League's profile has overlapped with the decline of the English national team. "Their league has become a platform for the best foreign talent in the world to play on English soil," he said, suggesting its growth has stunted homegrown youth development. "We think fondly of British footballers here -- we see them as physical players who drink heavily and die young."

Lukas Podolski
He has actually played very well. He has started 21 games and has 8 goals and 9 assists.

that little barb surprised me. Podolski clearly isn't the most talented German, but he's a stalwart selection for any and every big game Der Mannschaft play.

Really odd article. And all of those shots you listed are, quite frankly, stupid.
Of all our transfers in recent years, Poldi is criticized?
Lower income fans are the die hards and this guy is ON IT!
The English national team is in pretty good shape at the moment going forward, especially with technically skilled young players who have undoubtedly improved from the league's transformation.

That was the best part of the article certainly. The Bundesliga is fun to watch. Hope it catches on more.

we'll need a viable broadcaster. right now, we no longer have that.

Really wish Fox Soccer would try to buy the rights now that it's losing the Premier League and has already lost La Liga and Serie A.
Can't survive on just UEFA competition and SPL.

I'm a bit surprised to see the comment about the French. The national team is clearly a big deal, so I'm a little surprised the league is struggling so much.

I'm all for more soccer leagues being visible on most cable providers. I currently enjoy watching Bayern Munich from the Bundesliga, but that is just because they are the most visible. I'd love to pick a less popular team and be able to follow them like I follow Arsenal.

My mother's maiden name is Dudenhefer. I think it would be cool to try to figure out where the name derives from in Germany and pick the nearest team.

HH and I are the resident FCB fans, you're welcome to join us. but if you're looking for a "lower profile" club then HSV like WSE mentioned or the new boys Eintracht Frankfurt who look more and more like they will actually qualify for Champions League next year. Gladbach is also a decent choice. I'm sure you know about the germericans' respective teams as well if youre into that kind of thing.

Bayern has been my B team due to my love of watching Robben play. Now that he is getting up there and will probably not be there much longer, it might be time to choose a more underdoggish squad.

Why have they done so well this year?

young squad, score a lot of goals, good fans. alexander meier is very good player, also sebastian jung on the RB has been playing well. sebastian Rode is one of the better CM prospects in germany, Takashi Inui is a nice japanese playmaker. Probably the most important thing though, is their home record- i believe they are on 7 wins 3 draws and 1 loss

having been to a psg vs. marsellies match in october, i can vouch for this. looked like loads of trash. my wife was supposed to go with me, but she ended up getting sick and my father in law came instead. i'm honestly really glad it happened that way, because it was probably a 50:1 men to women ratio and i didn't see a single child.
it was still a hell of a time and the people that were there were definitely wild.
