Coach Starkey returns to the PMAC tonight for the first time as an opponent when his new team, the Texas A&M Aggies, take on the Lady Tigers...
-7 years as a men's assistant
-13 years as a women's assistant
-5 Final Four's with the women, including one when he stepped in as acting head coach during "Pokey-Gate"
-Worked under Dale Brown, Sue Gunter, Pokey Chatman, and Van Chancellor. Worked with Johnny Jones.
-All-around pretty good guy...
One day down the road, after he isn't in enemy territory, I hope LSU can recognize him in some way for all that he did in his days here.
Thanks for the memories Coach....but you are going DOWN tonight!

I think it would be wonderful if a large amount of fans did that to him the first time he comes out onto the court.
Actually though, I hope he gets a nice ovation when the teams are introduced.

Pretty impressive LSU resume.
Down with the Agg but I agree at some point he should be recognized for his time with LSU.

Wouldn't be surprised to see 2500-3000 there...especially with it being a student priority point game.
hehe

I know a number of the booster club members plan on recognizing him tonight in some way. He definitely deserves it. If he'd wanted to, he'd be the head coach of the Lady Tigers right now.

Hes the reason we were so good. Why didnt he want to be head coach? Or was it LSU that didnt want him? Either way it was a huge mistake letting him go. Its painfully obvious he was what made this team click.

100% class and deserves a lot of credit for the final fours etc. More than anything he is the only person who stayed from Gunter to Van and did a masterful job keeping the scandal out of things as much as possible. Wish NC would have kept him, but then we would not get to see her male coach get arrested...sorry, in any case, thanks Bob, most of LSU appreciates you

He is just that rare person that doesn't want to be a head coach. I always heard that he wasn't a big fan of recruiting. He is just a basketball junkie that would rather spend 20 hours a day breaking down game film instead of watching high school kids play in faraway places.

Starkey was offered the job and said that he had no desire to take on the responsibilities of being a head coach. He is recognized as one of THE BEST coaches in the game. I think it would've been difficult for Nikki to keep him around because he's a better, more seasoned coach than she is at this point. It might've made things very awkward. As it is things have worked out. He's working with another one of the best coaches in the game and we have a young, up and coming coach who will be with the program for years.

I have met Starkey a couple times since he moved here. He is settling in fine but like me he misses the food , freinds and family now and then.

BTW, A + M by 17 tonight. Yep, he's not good enough for Nikki.
Get Mulkey in here next year with Starkey as the chief assistant.

Starkey coaches just as much as the head coach.. just while sitting down. He's pretty funny to watch.

Well I know he probably didn't think that way but he pretty much told Nikki "in your face" yesterday.

I was thinking the same thing.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You can generally tell who follows women's basketball by who makes dumb comments like that.
Why would Mulkey leave a program that she built from the ground up, for a school that was essentially her rival institution as a player and coach?
As for Starkey, I'm not so sure it was so much an "in your face" moment. It was good that everyone got a fresh start after Van left. Nikki is a young up and coming coach. She doesn't need an older more experienced coach second guessing her while she's establishing her program. On the other side, Bob was able to land a job with the BEST coach in the SEC who's also a hall of fame coach. That's a better fit for him in my opinion. Nikki needs to build her own legacy, and deal with the difficulties that go along with that.
LSU has played well against the last three ranked teams they've played TAMU, UK, and USC........regardless of what the final score indicates. All of those games were close till the last two minutes...................when this team just ran out of gas. And that's gonna be the case probably the rest of this season with such a young, thin team. That's what happens in a REBUILDING year. The team will be much improved next season with the added infusion of talent and depth, and the experience being gained by the newer players. The future is bright.
