Does anyone else think opening acts are worthless?

I can only think of one or two times when an opening act (one that I've never heard of prior) has left a good impression on me. Most of the time,in fact, the opener is flatout terrible. Is this a plot by the headliner to make themselves sound better?

I have never seen an opening act I thought was terrible some I thought were not that great.
I thought GIVERS blew the Dirty Projectors out of the water when they opened for them in BR and I love the Dirty Projectors.

I agree 100%
A friend of mine always compares opening acts to "jobbers" in pro wrestling. Lol
It especially worse when your going to see a band that has an exremly loyal fan base who only wants to see that particular group

Most often now i go to see the openers.
My dad loves to tell the story of when he went to see Boston at the Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport way back in the day, and some unknown band called Van Halen opened for them, and after they were done Boston didn't stand a chance.

Your favorite bands all opened for someone at one point in their careers.

Yeah, last time I saw Radiohead it was like this. Their opening act was from Kentucky and had fake British accents

A lot of singers who are big now started out as opening acts for someone.

Debatable that all of them did. Still in those instances the band probably just hadn't honed their craft yet.

It all depends on the opener is, Ive gone to see many opening bands and left before the headliner...
I'll say that I'm not a huge fan of more than one opener as a general rule (obviously it depends on the band), too much of a time commitment and the headliner goes on way too late... yes, I'm old...

Most concerts I would agree with you. I usually avoid openings acts, but a couple years ago I stumbled into an MGMT show too early and the opening act was Tame Impala. They had just come over from Australia and played most of InnerSpeaker.

Oh, and no worse feeling thinking you were clever enough to plan your arrival midway through the openers act, only to find out that they havent started yet... and not only that, the promoter threw some local band on the bill, too... who hasnt even started yet

I thought when I saw the Balck Crows open for ZZ top in the early 90's that they were very good. I thought they were better then the headliner that night.

I saw the GIVERS open for the Flaming Lips at the Varsity and I was very impressed. As for other openers, can't even think of some of their names, so I guess that shows how much of an impression it had on me

one worse feeling: missing the opening band and 6 months later realizing how bad arse said band is and you wished you wouldn't have missed them live.

I've seen TONS of opening bands that were worth the price of admission (not that they were better than the headliner)...
Reverend Horton Heat opening for Soundgarden
Concrete Blonde opening for Sting
Vertical Horizon opening for The Samples
The Cranberries and Counting Crows opening for The London Suede
Nitzer Ebb opening for Depeche Mode (cdawg - thought I was the only one)
Lush opening for Weezer
ETA:
Days of the New opening for Metallica
Paula Cole opening for Sarah McLachlan

Exactly, but also in the old days, you could see opening acts that were just as big as the headliners. I think after time, some headliners even felt like they were being outshined by opening acts, so they started really digging up no-chance no-name bands.
On a different note, under the "who would have thought", can you believe Jimi Hendrix Experience opened for the Monkees??
