Sorry you're the 2% who can't appreciate greatness.
I like Shawshank, but it is not greatness by any means.

Anyone who despises Shawshank Redemption, Forest Gump, or Pulp Fiction needs to have their right to watch movies revoked.

Agreed. It's just one of those films that everyone seems to like. Its like hating Almost Famous, which my mom told me yesterday that she hated that movie. I just stared blankly at her for a few minutes unable to comprehend how anyone can dislike that movie.
I had to look that one up on Wikipedia, having never heard of it.

Andy Dufrene is a douche. Morgan Freeman is too wise and noble. Wise, noble people don't end up in prison. The bad-guy warden is one dimensional. Yeah, prison staff are not the brightest bulbs in the world, but nobody is that stupid to miss out on the hero's escape method all those years.
I despise movie watchers like yourself. You people have to nitpick everything.

A must watch as soon as possible. It ended up on a lot of critics 10 best films of the 2000s decade.

A Time to Kill, apparently not written by Grisham but by a DNC speech writer. Also:
The Fountain
Easy Rider (scatterbrained nonsense)
All of the overrated Apatow movies

I remember hating American Beauty the first time I saw it, haven't seen it again since.

Pretty much.
Shawshank isn't the greatest film ever made but I really don't see how anyone could hate it overall.

I realize different people have different tastes in movies, but I don't know how anyone could despise any of the above movies.

Shawshank was great.
Forrest Gump is amazing. You can watch it several times over the years. I don't know how any American could not like this movie.

Don't despise, but just never got...I watched the first two Lord of Rings movies, never saw the last one. Seemed all the same. I also don't get the hype on The HObbit...seems like same BS.

Midnight in Paris - as painfully contrived and heavy handed as a movie can possibly be
Yes, and yes. I couldn't believe how awful it was. I hated every character in the movie.
I can see how people don't like this movie, but I loved it.
I honestly think that this movie speaks more for the artistic people than others. If you are a writer, artist, musician, etc. this movie's message is geared more towards you.

Shocking and depressing.
This is why Jersey Shore has high ratings. Stupid Americans.
Because they don't like all the movies you do? My you are open-minded.

And I don't like Stephen King in general. He apparently didn't do any research at all on how prisons operate, because there are a number of glaring errors. But he's Stephen King, and a lot of people will read his books and go see movies based on them, no matter how shitty. Good for him, I guess.
The novella and movie are not documentaries on prison life. They are stories that are set in a prison.
It would not be entertaining to watch Andy do the daily routine of a prisoner. It is entertaining watching him manipulate the system.
Also, I am not a huge fan of this film. I like it, but I can pass it up on when it's on tv.

+1.
Watched it a few weeks ago and I forgot how bad it was. Definitely not best picture worthy.

So typical that the Academy would love it.
I think you and I have a lot of similar tastes
