I was a scout team RB when he was the RBs coach under Cholly Mac. He treated me with as much respect and same attitude as he had with the All American and All SEC backs, (Alexander/Brad Davis). One heck of an individual. One day, a hot shot back from Texas gave him some shite and he immediately challenged him to go into the padded workout room and man up. The hot shot declined.

Archer-Dinardo-Hallman fiasco is on the LSU BOS and Joe Dean, not Brodhead
Bob did some good things at LSU, but they were far over shadowed by his anything goes approach to getting what he wanted.
Arnsparger coached LSU in his final season with the Fla. AD job in his back pocket.imo
Jeez, what a clusterfrick most of 80-94 was for LSU football.
Jerry is a great guy.

One of my 1st football memories is seeing him play in Tulane stadium on the freshman team around 1959. Still my all time favorite Tiger and as fine a person as there is.

People forget that he had to Coach with a Staff he did not select. When he had chances to pick Asst's he brought in Mack Brown and Pete Jenkins, two of the greatest Asst's ever at LSU.

Jerry is a nice and fine Christian man. He had never been a coach when he came to LSU. Certainly had a lot to learn becoming a HC. In time, he would have done the job. He was more like Dietzel and nothing like Mac. Bill was my coach...knew the game from top to bottom.

I agree 100%. Jerry could have saved his job had he not redshirted all of the studs in his last recruiting class. Arnsparger was a great coach but he had a championship caliber team handed to him on a silver platter.

I helped out with a 10K run a while back and ended up working with Jerry Stovall for most of it. It took a while before I realized who he was. He's one of the good guys for sure.

Being a nice guy and a great HC are not necessarily compatible.
Stovall is a prince of a guy but really knew very little about coaching. He is the only person who won the Walter Camp Coach of the year and was fired the next year.
Stovall lost his team and his coaches and his job. Bob Broadhead had no choice.
Stovall never coached again.

When I graduated West Monroe HS in 1954, Jerry was the star of the 8th grade team. Close friend played on the team with him and said Jerry did not have great eyesight wearing thick glasses. He simply ran over people ala Jim Taylor. One of WMHS' greatest athletes of all time and they've had many.

Stovall may have been a loyal Tiger, but he was no great coach...his last year at LSU, we failed to win one SEC game...that's why he was fired! His players quit and that's a fact. Arnsparger came in and won the SEC, with the same players. Jerry was good at raising funds, but he was not equipped to head an SEC Program, good recruiter or not!!
