Just curious.

But it costs a few hundred dollars at those places and you can do it free online if you make under 57,000. The companies who do it free are listed on the IRS website so they can be trusted.
I was just wondering if their was any real benefit to going somewhere and getting your taxes done.

I believe some can get their refund right then and the company will get a cut of it. Some folks can't stand to wait the couple of weeks.

because some peoples tax returns are more than a single simple form thats completed in 10 minutes

There are so many loop holes and if you are going long form, sometimess one need a pro. I did go into one and the bitch didn't know jackshit and I had to point things out. Got up and walked out about half way, no pay.
Had to use a CPA that year.

How do you know if you need a long form?
I own a car, pay rent, filed 0, I'm single, no kids, no charity giving, no work related expenses, that's all I know. Their is nothing else to tell.

This is what I don't understand. I pay my accountant to do my taxes. He charges me 90 bucks. And I'm pretty sure he's more competent than the folks at HR Block.

me neither. I do mine myself, although I have a degree in accounting.

damn that's cheap

Maybe Zach's CPA only needs 20 minutes to prepare his taxes.

H&R Block is not cheaper than most CPAs. I'm a CPA and I'd say 50-60% of the time I save my clients more money in unknown deductions than my bill. Also provide year-round quick answers to questions. Plus the personal relationship that is developed over time and having the same person work on your stuff each year is well worth it to my clients.

The way he posts I would think his sch d alone would take a few hours

One of my clients is a CPA and he always comes to me to prepare his returns. I asked him one day why he doesn't do them himself. He asked me if I change my own oil and I said no. He then asked if, with some direction, could I do it myself. I said yes. He then said so why do I pay someone to do it.
So there is your answer. Some people would just rather not do it.

Because we've got a business with about every schedule form there is needing to be filled out. I'm not doing that!!!!!!!!
We pay dearly but I'm comfortable with the results.

You should really go to a CPA instead of places like h&r block to prepare your return, especially with a farm. I'd even recommend finding one that specializes in farm returns since there's so many rules specific for that industry.
