re: 3 things you hate most in sports right now?

1. ESPN or any other sport leading headlines that make you form an opinion by reading the title. Ex: Rory says Tiger and Phil are "just getting old." The article said they are getting older and have 5-10 playing years left. That is just fact! But if you read the headline he's slamming them.
2. ESPN's constant influx of random people's opinions. I don't really give a shite about Herm Edwards opinion on who will win the super bowl. Not informative or entertaining.
3. Golden Tate

Gonna go a little outside the box here with Golden Tate. Dude celebrates every 4 yard catch like he just made the Blue Grass Miracle catch.
And he gave some major douchebag press conferences after the "Fail Mary"

re: Spent a week in Boston, sales tax was a surprise!

The additional burden on businesses from collecting a sales tax is often overlooked. I'm a CPA and for your average small business collected and paying in sales tax is a never ending pain in the arse. Part of these "consumption" tax discussions is making just about everything sales taxable. Everyone offering a service would have to start charging sales tax.
Consumers do not know or care about the difference between what you are receiving for your goods or service and the sales tax on it. The fact is it would end up making everything look more expensive, causing small businesses to have to eat some portion of the sales tax percentage by lowering their prices.

Couldn't agree more. If he didn't have an every man nickname like Bubba or have long hair he wouldn't get all the passes he gets. What a PR machine

Does Picasa require your photos to be accessible? I don't want all of my pictures on google plus or any social media.

Any charge for flickr? What kind of space do they offer?
Cloud storage for pictures
Posted by Tenforty1728 on 8/5/14 at 10:04 am
I'm looking for a website with cloud storage to keep all of my digital pictures safe. I have been using an external hard drive in case my computer were to crash or something, but I noticed the other day it is about 10 feet from my computer, so that doesn't do me much good in a fire or flood. It's a lifetime of memories I'd hate to lose.
I've looked somewhat into google drive and I know Amazon provides storage. I have about 10-15 GBs of data that needs to be stored, which exceeds most sites free capacity. I don't mind paying for it as long as its reasonable and easy. I would also prefer to keep them organized in folders the way I have them rather than 5,000 pictures just randomly stored.
Any suggestions or experience with this?

I'm not saying "wow playing golf in the heat is such a magic weight loss solution." It's obvious you sweat a ton and lose water weight. I'm talking about calorie burning which would be independent of losing water weight.

Y'all don't think your heart rate is accelerated when it's 98 degrees outside?
Calories burned in the heat

If any OTers hit the golf courses this weekend you felt the rath of July in Louisiana.
After being outside for 4+ hours, I felt like I had run about 5 miles. I was just curious and started looking at online estimators for how many calories are burned by playing 18 holes of golf with a cart. The range was roughly 700 - 1250.
My question for the OT geniuses:
If this estimate is based on normal weather (say 70-75 degrees) what kind of additional percentage of calories are likely being burned? If you've played golf when it's 70 and played when it's a heat index of 103, you know the energy used is vastly different.
My personal opinion, albeit an uneducated one, is about 20-30% Seems like your resting heart rate is much higher when you're in those brutal conditions.

The fact that you don't have any kids or a house makes you more likely to owe, not less. I would have it taken out of the next few checks if you're not living way above your means needing every dollar.

I would like to hear some figures on how much less they're spending trying to catch these RUTHLESS pot dealers and maybe catching some real criminals. I imagine if you combine the tax revenue with the savings of cops elsewhere (hoping its not out giving stupid traffic tickets) then you've got a system helping everyone.
re: CFB's 2013 top 10 toughest schedules
Posted by Tenforty1728 on 8/29/13 at 3:51 pm to PeaRidgeWatash
Don't be ridiculous homers. LSU's schedule is really difficult this year but it's ok for other teams to have hard schedules too. Cal's is tough. @ Oregon, @ Stanford and playing Northwestern (who will contend for the big 10 championship) and Ohio State as out of conference games. That sounds like LSU in 2011 playing the Pac 12 and Big East champs in the same year as a beast of an SEC schedule.
You can love LSU and still admit other teams have tough schedules.

I would probably put 2 allowances on my W-4 and enjoy the small bit "extra" i'm keeping each paycheck while still making sure I don't owe at the end of the year.
I'm a CPA, so granted I stay much closer on my taxes than your average joe, but I really like to spot check my withholding around October each year. If you have a good CPA they can do this for you pretty cheaply and see where you stand. Many people have paid in enough by the end of October and can not withhold any on their November or December paychecks rather than waiting until March to get that money that is rightfully yours. Everyone can use a little extra cash around the holidays.

re: Paying Car Off
Posted by Tenforty1728 on 2/11/13 at 4:13 pm to jmtigers
Don't overthink this. We're not talking about enough money to worry about not paying the note off and investing the cash. We're talking about saving roughly $350 a year in interest by paying the thing off. Just consider that savings and enjoy not having a car note anymore and continue to be a responsible saver like it sounds like you are.
Everyone take a chill pill with YOU MUST THROW EVERYTHING IN A ROTH!!! and NOOOO DONT PAY OFF ANYTHING YOU CAN EARN MORE THAN THAT INVESTING!!!! How much return are you really going to see from that over and beyond the guaranteed return of not paying a bank interest for a car note? Not worth the risk. Pay off the debt and enjoy being relatively debt-free.

Yes your refund will go down, but your checks throughout the year will go up. You're not leaving any money out there or anything, just spreading it out through each paycheck rather than a big refund at the end of the year.
re: New Job- Dependent Question
Posted by Tenforty1728 on 2/11/13 at 11:23 am to dallastiger55
A W-4 asks for a number of "allowances" rather than a number of dependents. It tries to factor in other items such as the child tax credit and the dependent care credit to more accurately withhold taxes throughout the year and prevent a large balance due, or a large refund.
As far as a "tax break" from what you put down, it won't matter. It will just affect what you get back or owe at the end of the year. The lower the number of allowances, the more taxes are withheld from your paycheck.
If you're married with 2 kids, you should put at least 3 allowances. If you typically get the child tax credit ($1,000) you should add an allowance for each credit you usually receive. I would suggest being conservative with this and putting 3 total allowances and see where that puts your refund at the end of '13. You shouldn't owe anything (assuming you have no income outside of your w-2) but your refund may still be large, meaning you didn't have access to that money during the year and gave uncle sam an interest free loan. But the flip side of that is putting too many allowances and owing him something at the end of the year, so I tell my clients to err on the side of a refund.
Hope this helps

I graduated undergrad with a BS in Accounting in 2010 and completed the masters program in 2011. If your plan is to sit for the CPA (meaning you'll need the extra 30 hours) I would recommend that if your financial situation allows for another year of school. Can't say that anyone in the professional world has asked me if I have a masters yet or if anyone cares once you have CPA behind your name, but I learned a lot in the program and didn't find it much harder than undergrad other than you have to go to class. Shouldn't be a problem by that point in your academic career.
As far as avenues you can go, I did not go work for one of the big 4 like 90% of my graduating class. There are good smaller companies in Baton Rouge or elsewhere that are looking for qualified, ambitious young people. Don't let the LSU department brainwash you into thinking you absolutely have to be an auditor and MUST go work for the big 4. Any time I told them I was going work for a firm with 10 CPAs and mostly working on small businesses you would have thought I told them I was going teach 1st graders how to add with my masters. Joke is on them, I have a much less stressful job than the 90% of my classmates and make almost what they make and will surely surpass them in a few years.
The CPA is the key in all of that education though. Don't go through it and not seal it with a CPA. Once you have those credentials your possibilities are limitless.

re: Wife and I seriously considering building a house

Best thing that I did while building was put a natural gas spout on my back porch for a grill. Never have to fill a propane tank again, and doing this pre-construction cost an incredible $50 where this would cost over $1,000 to do post-construction. I would also recommend having the contractor deck a large portion of your attic for storage. Also easier to do pre-construction. I put a cable outlet in my garage as well. Hasn't come in handy yet, but it was like $20 and I know I'll want it at some point.
