Scoping a 45-70

Just bought the CVA Optima Elite Stalker 45-70. Any of you have a 45-70? What scope would you recommend? A scope that withstands the recoil must be a big factor.

The new Redfields are nice scopes and easy on the wallet. They are made by Leupold.

I put a Leupold on mine. Didn't have the rings tightened down enough. I went to take my first shot, it popped off the mount, cut my eyebrow, flipped a couple of times and landed on the floor.
Picked it up, got the loctite out, secured it with that, and took it out after zeroing it that afternoon.
I killed a buck at 50 yds that day. It flopped right over. I nicknamed it flopper after that hunt for what it did to the scope, and that deer.
I know, csb. But I love telling it.

Funny thing, when i got my 45-70 2 yr ago i had extra cheap simmons 3x9 so i put it on as temp just to shoot it... Well its still on there and not any issue! Prob put 75-100 rounds thru it and no issue at all!

If you want a good scope and would also like to save a little money, I'd suggest new Redfields, Leupold Rifleman or factory refurbished Nikon (here LINK /). A 2-7X scope should be plenty of magnification. Use a Weaver type base w/ Burris Signature Z Rings. Attach base to receiver w/ a drop of blue Loctite on each screw.

Thanks guys. I'll shop around for a redfield. I have a leupold on my weatherby. So if they back redfield, im good with that.

I put a new Redfield Revolution 3x9x40 on mine this year and have not had any problems. I missed a deer twice with it in 3 seconds flat a while back, but I'd been drinking most of the afternoon so that one was on me.

Leupold redfield or Nikon are good and low cost. Anything expensive will hold up as well.
Make sure you get very good bases and rings. Leupold or better.

I just took the cheap simmons I had on my muzzleloader and put it on my .45-70. I'm not wasting a bunch of money on a rifle I will only use 2 or 3 times a year. You need a scope that is good for 100 yards and that's it.

$100 bushnell on mine.

Pops had a $120 pine ridge on his and it broke just sighting the gun in. Lasted about 15 shots.

This is the one I have on my 444. I like it and it wasn't that expensive. 150.00 i think.

yeah, the efficiency of the scope definitely drops when that happens.
