I had completely forgotten they had been good enough to make the bcs before, or at least had been hyped enough to make a bcs game before. Seriously what team has 4 bcs appearances in the bcs era and has been less relevant.

This goes back to scheduling. If you play a weak schedule you are not going to be prepared to take on a team like Bama or LSU in a bowl game.
This is why the SEC is winning titles and bowl games, they play good teams for 8-9 weeks during the season and are ready come bowl time.
