How does Gary Bettman still have a job?

He has presided over 2 disastrous lockouts. He got a shite TV deal for the league. Hockey is in far worse shape as a brand now than it was 20 years or so ago.
Say Goodell sucks all you want but the NFL is stronger than ever and hockey is irrelevant.

i thought the owners won the last lockout pretty handily, which gives him some backing
*ETA: "i thought" means based on memory, as i don't have an opinion as to who won

they did, but do the ends justify the means with hockey weaker in the long run?

i'm going to assume that since there have been 2 lockouts in recent memory, the owners just enjoy flexing that muscle
in terms of the lockouts, i think GB is just doing as he's told

In spite of Roger.
anyone could have taken over control of the NFL and done fine. Honestly, I see changes he's made and planning on making really hurting the league in the years to come.

He may be taking care of the owners in negotiations, but the overall health of the league seems to be diminishing big time since he took over. But the owners and that douche are so arrogant that they think the fans will keep coming back.
NHL needs to let steroids in so they can have a 250 goal scorer one season and bring in some casual fans.

The first Super Bowl played in Europe or Mexico is going to be a disaster.

just as goodell took over a money maker, the NHL is going the opposite direction. i don't know if it's GB's fault

the NHL is largely a skill-based league, so i don't see how they'd help scoring. if anything they'd help defense

holy shite he wants to do a Super Bowl in a foreign country?
man... regular season games are bad enough but that would be ridiculous.

The NHL is an unsustainable business model. Attendance in most places sucks and player salaries are out of control. Owners lose money hand over fist.

Plus owners give out crazy contracts
Posted on 1/6/13 at 1:10 pm to LSUCanFAN
nothing infuriates me more than owners complaining about player salaries when they hand out the huge contracts willingly

The NHL is the only pro sports league where roids are not illegal.
This lockout was needed. 70% of the teams are losing money or close to it. The league will be back if they can make it competitive.

These owners needed saving from themselves, GB does that, seriously if I was an owner I'd keep him on payroll, tv money is going in the right direction, attendance in Canada is at capacity and i see 2-3 franchises going bye bye in the league...i view trimming dead wood as a plus though...

The above statement appears to be in conflict with this:
"Following the 2004-05 NHL lockout the fans came back in droves. During the 2005-06 season 25 of the 30 teams had an increase in attendance from the 2003-04 season. Moreover, the average cost (tickets, concessions, parking, etc.) for a family of four rose from $256 in 2003-04, to $283 at the start of the 2007-08 campaign. The latest figures from Team Marketing Report, for 2011, show the average cost at $329, a 29% increase since the season before the 2004-05 lockout.
Thanks to the fans who continued to pour through the turnstiles, the value of the average NHL team has increased from $159 million in 2003, to $240 million last year, while the average salary for a hockey player has increased from $1.6 million to $2.4 million."

Yeah, fans showed up after the last strike but most money comes from TV and their deal was shite.
