All the hoorah seems to be on the AR's and not the AK's

Why so ?

I know AK's are "heavier" and are say 30 cal, a bigger round and both are semi autos.

Are AK's not made anymore and all in the hands of the "sand" armies ?

So why not an AK ?

AK's are built ruggedly and purposely sloppy to survive the abuse illiterate conscripts subject them to.

AR's are built with far more precision and with far more configurations to better fit the professional soldiers who carry them and their varying needs.

5.56 vs 7.62 is WAY overrated. Especially as a civilian, with modern SP and BT ammo available, the 5.56x45 can easily get the job done against 2-legged varmints. People who say otherwise are idiots.

AK pros:
More powerful
Cheaper ammo
More reliable
AK cons:
ugly
less accurate (but still very accurate within 100yds)

AR pros:
Extremely customizable
More accurate
AR cons:
Ammo is 50-75% more expensive
More delicate than AKs

Even in basic where we cleaned our M16s nightly before turning them in to the armorer, once we got to the field or range (Ft. Dix = sand), you would get the Ol' "pop, pop, screech" about 30% of the time. My go to is an AK 74. Easy to shoot, never fails to fire and the 5.45x39 is plenty accurate. One thing I noticed is that the gas tube on an AK is so big that you could probably never clean it and never fail to get proper return pressure. In the end, it's all about what you're comfortable with. Both platforms have killed plenty.

The main reason AR15 models are selling like hotcakes right now is because it is the specific model that the media is targeting. The AWB includes both models, but the AR is the one being demonized in full force right now. The AK has been demonized since it was invented in 1947.

I'm a little late for this thread, but let me throw in this bit.

An AK is not for home defense unless you live out in the country and don't have family sleeping in any room other than yours.

Dang 7.62x39 penetrates like a mother. It's like a semi-auto .30-30. Will go right through a house, and perhaps the next one too.
