I've seen officials use a card or something similar to place between the ball and the stick.

What conference were these refs from?

From the pics posted, it looks like you have views from angles both slightly behind and slightly in front of the ball. Both show a gap. Also, there were coaches and players standing right next to it who were incredulous when he signaled first down because they could see it was short.
You seem like a douche calling people fricktards and stupid conspiracy theorists over this pretty obvious bad call.

Unless and until someone can provide the correct camera angle that proves he was wrong; it's whiney BS. The guy with 30+ years experience stood over the ball and made his decision. Deal with it....

There are multiple angles, not to mention Spurrier is looking at it from a post side angle. If there was such controversy why didn't he use a card like other Refs have in similar situations?
Quit spreading your BS around the thread, bad officiating is bad officiating. Just because they have an ignorant belief in their infallible judgement doesn't mean they are right.
My question is why didn't the replay officials just get it right and move the spot another two inches back rather than knowingly giving a bogus first down? Isn't it more important that they get the call right, rather than supporting a bad decision by the white hat. It reminds me of MLB when the guy is 4 feet off the bag and the Ump calls him out. We live in a digital age where we can prove you screwed up, so when you have the tools to fix it, fix it.

quote:First, demanding a camera angle directly down the line is unrealistic and not necessary for proof. You have two angles posted on the first page. One from what appears to be slightly ahead of the ball and one from behind it. Both show a gap. The live coverage showed a gap. The people on the field directly next to it saw the gap.
Unless and until someone can provide the correct camera angle that proves he was wrong
This seems like just a contrarian shtick by you.

Refs are basically cops. If they were given the chance, they would shoot your mascot in its cage and taze your QB.

He claims he's a ref.

It's because you don't have to get it to the stick, you just have to get the ball past the last chain, which they did. The connecting piece doesn't count.

wrong.
at least I have never seen it that way before because I have seen them roll a ball sideways to see if it hits the stick...and use something like a credit card and slide it down the pole and see if it touches the ball
ETA: I thought the strangest part of the play was the ref never even got at an even angle or knelt down to get a close look
he first signaled standing up from behind the marker...then he quickly squatted down a little and re checked from once again a behind angle
even the other officials looked around confused like he should have checked closer
go to :45 seconds in this video if you haven't seen it...he barely even hovers over it from a backwards angle before calling it

I like how the ref holding the stick gives it a little backwards nudge after all the hubbub.
"See, look... First down, just like he said."
That whole sequence was like catching a six year old in a lie.
