If its a real big rat then it could be a rat. I had a rat run off with one of the sticky traps on its back several times. I would try the same technique but with a varmint cage trap. I had much more success with this and actually caught several big rats in my backyard. Academy has it or a lot of local hardware stores for like $30.

I've had a cage trap out for the last month with no success, as well as a poison baited "roach motel" type trap they haven't touched.
