He had permission to negotiate his contract.

Not if he can't cover a top-level NFL WR. I mean its great to be excited, he's a good coach. It's great news for NOLA, but chill out with the "we woulda won it all this year but for Goodell " crap. You wouldn't have, not with that defense.

It's actually not, but whatever.

This is so inaccurate. The Saints biggest problem wasn't the defense this year, it was the offense's ineffectiveness with converting 3rd downs & capitalizing in the redzone especially early in the season. Those are aspects of the offense under Payton that have been consistently consistent. Because of the failures in these areas, the Saints have been on the other end of some lopsided TOP affairs.
The inability to convert 3rd downs & sustain drives in return forced the defense to see more snaps & play more minutes then they should. It didn't help either that Pete Carmichael waited until week 8 to run the ball or use any "heavy" packages to jump start the run game. The offense was basically one dimensional & one dimensional offenses usually don't have much success on 3rd downs or in the redzone.
When the offense is clicking, converting 3rd downs & cashing in the red zone, all the defense has to do is make a few stops & create a turnover or two. It's a simple recipe for victory that led to double digit win seasons from '09-'11. If the offense would have been ineffective in the listed areas in any season from '09-'11 then we would have seen similar numbers given up then as well because the defenses during that stretch wasn't great either.
All one has to do is look at New England & see that this formula can lead to 10+ win season & playoff birth. The Pats defense isn't great but they get turnovers & make enough stops whereas their offense is balanced & efficient. New England converts on 3rd down at a high percentage & in the redzone as well. They maximize their possessions & opportunities which allows them to consistently win the TOP battle. Winning the TOP battle limits the other teams possessions & snaps for their own defense. On top of that, their capitalizing in the redzone by scoring touchdowns, not field goals or turning the ball over, puts pressure on opposing offenses to match them. At times the opposition, presses & that pressing leads to mistakes & turnovers.
Basically, the Saints defense has made stops or gotten turnovers at crucial points in many games this year but the offense's inconsistency has cost them. This is area that will improve back to it's level of the last few season. At times this season under Carmichael, the play calling & play design has been atrocious especially in the redzone & on 3rd down.

So what NFC West team will bounce the Saints out of the playoffs next year?

Making a cool 8 million a year.
Payton > Belichick, thats for sure.
Payton > Belichick, thats for sure.

Belichick signed his extension in 2007. Are you completely ignorant of the concept of inflation?
