Anybody know what this is and if it's good to eat? Catch them with some regularity out of Prien in Lake Charles but don't know what they are.

Google "Channel Mullet"

Dem Alabamians and Floridaridians love em.

Cajun French people down here like to call em "Robal"

Channel mullet. We catch them around Last Island all the time. Very good eating and just as good as trout IMO. Plus there is no limit

It's a southern kingfish but everyone calls it a channel mullet or in GI some of those locals call it a beach croaker.

Mullett / Whiting

Favorite way to eat is to gut 'em wash out the cavity, split the ribs, hit it with your favorite dry seasonig, lay it out on the smoker rack and smoke at 200-225 for an hour and a half. Pick the meat off while sucking down a brew. You can also pick the meat off and make a killer smoked fish spread for crackers and Scoops. You can buy smoked Mullett everywhere here in Florida. Its like boudin in Lousiana, every little store or bait shop has their own recipe....I try 'em all!

We catch ground mullet all the time killing time while surf fishing. They are good to eat if you can catch them with any size.

I caught that exact fish Sunday on artificial and was wondering the same.

It has a purple tint like a Speckled Trout...
