re: Will the backlash from the public about "Pelicans" change Benson's mind?

I think so. It's interesting that after 3-4 days Drew Brees went to social media and did a fan poll. Why would he do that? Doing that seems like a slap to the face of the man paying you $100mill. Orrrr did Benson see the backlash an say Drew, the most popular man in New Orleans, do a fan poll "on your own" to see what fans think.
My 2cents.

The "backlash" is, quite frankly, retarded.
There's nothing wrong with Pelicans. Anyone getting there panties in a bunch over it is really misguided.
But I'm not getting into a Pelicans love/hate circle jerk again, so I won't comment any more on the subject.

The only way Brass would be better is if the colors were Black and Gold like the Saints.
Krewe is about the dumbest name that has been pitched. I can't believe people actually like it.
Pelicans will be cool after the transition. People just don't like change and want to bitch. It is better right now than a bunch of other names already used in the NBA and we don't even have a good color scheme or logo yet.

The backlash is partially knee-jerk reactions near the moment of discovery.
After a couple of days, there's been far less or that. That's not really a reaction.
Plus, it's not like people who are moderately pleased run naked down the street screaming, "I've got not problem with that!"
This idea that listening to the loudest screams equates to a true measurement of opinion should be discarded. See how many people are going out of their way 1 week from the `announcement'.
Or, notice how many people are not complaining about the colors at the moment like they were a week ago.
This is the long play, and Benson has been thinking about this for a number of years, at least about the Pelicans brand. A night of "lawdy lawdy!" isn't going to affect the course.

But several national polls indicate that the majority of all people polled, not just the loud voices, do not like it. Also, because the fervor has quieted down doesn't mean people are suddenly liking it. They've just grown tired of voicing their opinion, which happens in almost every situation like this.
I just think it is very disingenuous to imply that it was a small minority complaining, when it is clear that the general reaction is negative.

I understand that the concept clashes with your opinion, and thus you feel the need to discredit its value, but that is YOUR opinion.
"Who cares?" is a nonsensical retort.

I don't understand why you don't give a shite about what people from Oregon think about our name of the Pelicans. Oh wait, nobody has a fricking problem with the DUCKS!!!!1111

Okay, then let's just concentrate on the fact that the majority of those polled in Louisiana either "hate it" or "don't like it."

Pelicans takes a while to sit and digest. I never really gave a shite about "the masses" thoughts. Usually the masses are fricking ignorant. If you think its not fierce enough, cool enough, or local enough, then i pity your thoughts. Its a great name and I think would work out wonderfully given some time just like any name needs. New York Knickenbockers... oh man thats the best in the world... and its not great name just cause it had the ability to be shortened cause there's nothin cool about the word knick in and of itself.

Like I said, you need to bring up other shitty names to make Pelican seem decent by relation.

So now knicks too are a shitty name? I've never admitted that.

To be expected. As has been pointed out, many of the iconic nicknames in the league would fail to pass the initial public opinion poll today. That's the power of branding.

Voodoo apparently is unavailable. Brass is shitty 2nd choice settling for people still longing for a return of the Jazz. Outside of those 2 no names are really decent.

its kind of like highschool when all the cool kids end up unemployed and living in a trailer. that's what happens with the "cool" branding ideas.

People keep bringing them up as an example of shitty names.

Look at how the polls are administered and the sample sizes. Then think about who the websites attract. It's easy to say it just get, you know, everybody.
Untrue.
Polls that convey real information without interference (the phrasing of the questions, the alternatives, getting the data that is actually important for business reasons, asking the right mix of people to represent your target market, and more) is extremely difficult.
Again, there is a reason political campaigns play for scientific and professional polls and surveys rather than just checking out what CNN or Fox News says on the side of their page in the poll of the day.
This is not being disingenuous. This is understanding how data is gathered, processed, and analyzed.
The unscientific poll might be right, just like the person who always says "heads" might be right when I ask him what side landed face-up when I flipped a coin. That answer, even if right, contains no information. These polls are not nearly as extreme as that, but this is far from being clearly coupled to the signal.
Additionally, these things tend to be time-varying. People react poorly to many kinds of change at first, then the reaction subsides to a degree. The long-term effect is much more important for a rebrand. These polls, therefore, contain less of the actual relevant information than they do of the short term, more irrelevant information.

The most sensitive people seems to be those that like the name. Those are the people that are sniping at people for having a differing opinion of their's and making excuses for why the name is meeting universal disapproval. I don't think the backlash is retarded and just because my views are opposing to some people doesn't mean that I am misguided. That's a personal opinion. To me the reaction of the general public is not surprising but would do little regardless to change my perception. If the majority liked the name I would still dislike it because the name is not appealing to me. I didn't really favor any of the names that were brought up and that wasn't about disliking change, I just love the name we currently hold and see no reason for the change. It could be true that over time people will adjust to the name. I think a great logo design could help that.
Really though if Pelicans is the name chosen then I only have two options. Stop being a fan or get over it find a way to support the team despite my reservations about the name. And option number 1 isn't really an option.
