Is it fair to label him a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate for 2013?

Well, if you take a look at Mettenberger's numbers this season, they aren't exactly Robert Griffin III- or Johnny Manziel-type numbers, but you know that this kid is only going to get better with time.

This isn't to suggest that Mettenberger should be considered a Heisman Trophy lock heading into the 2013 season. But if he continues to improve and plays at an even higher level than he did to close out this season, then he certainly has a shot to put himself in the Heisman conversation.

"The 2013 winner of the Heisman Trophy is...Zach Mettenberger"

Not going to read the article, but if he has a stellar game against Clemson, I can see him being in the conversation going in to next season.

I am puzzled as to what he has done to give anyone the impression that he could be a Heisman contender.

I guess they are just looking at his potential and given that he is on a powerhouse team that should do well next yr.

Oline Oline Oline
If the Oline is spot on Mets gonna shine.
His lack of mobility demands a good Oline to give him time to find the receivers. He was lacking this the first half of the season. also the RB will be able to perform if they have good Oline to create the holes. We will have to see how it stacks up next season. Injuries, nfl draft all have a bearing on this.

Since he is not a running QB, this will not happen unless LSU becomes very unbalanced and stops running the ball.

With Hill and (insert other returning RB's) this will not happen.

Perhaps 2 td's per game, over 200 yrds per game, but not enought to really get in the conversation.

Good lord the sunshine pumpers are at it again. Mett for Heisman in 2013?!?!? Did you watch him this year? He had a couple good games and the rest were incredibly mediocre. Take off the purple and gold glasses and take a good look at Mett. Strong arm, but overall an underwhelming year. Zero chance he's in any Heisman conversation next year.

Yeah, because football players never get better from year to year, idiot.

Mett got exponentially better as the year progressed. Imagine what his numbers would look like if our WRs caught the ball the first half of the season. He also showed his toughness. Hell, if Les lets him make a 3rd down play against Bama we may very well be talking about Miami right now.

he's gonna have to put up at least Jamarcus' 06 numbers and shine in the big games. and even then we'd probably need to be undefeated. it's possible, but not likely.

I just want the undefeated part. Flynn 07 numbers should be sufficient for that.

Threw for 300 yards in 3 straight games against SEC competition, one of which was Alabama

Kind of a silly question. Anyone can be a Heisman contender. Heisman finalist is a different story.

Anyone that thinks any quarterback in a Les Miles system is going to win the Heisman is delusional and uneducated. And that is absolutely NOT a knock on Miles...I LOVE his philosophy....run and knock the hell out of the opponent, wear them down, and pass from time to time when you can.

Mettenberger will not sniff the Heisman, and I am absolutely fine with that. It is not his job to win the Heisman. It is his job to run the team, pass efficiently, and win games.

If manziel doesnt win it this year becuase he is a freshman, they will give it to him next year. Plus LSU would need to make a drastic change in play calling for mett to get the stats....

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

If Mett can just sniff 20TDs, cut down on the INTs and learn to throw it away (26 sacks this year), we will be a scary team next offensively next year.

this is true. also many overthrown passes. I'll be happy if he cleans those up, I'm not looking for Heisman type numbers.

Maybe not Heisman-winner material, but definitely All-SEC caliber (or better) - for three reasons:

(1) A strong running game is a QB's best friend.
(2) An experienced and powerful O-line is an even better friend!
(3) Returns every receiver but Shepard and brings in more who may be more talented than the starters

LSU will have these in embarrassing abundance in 2013.

With a breakout game against Clemson, Jeremy Hill could have a greater shot than Mett.
