It matters what free agents think about the team. It's not like a player is going to say "Their name is the Pelicans? I'm signing with the Mavericks." However, I think it is extremely naive to imply that public perception doesn't affect your ability to attract players. Hence, you should always care what "the nation" thinks.

So because the public thinks pelican is a dumb name, a player wouldn't want to come here because of the publics or "nations" feeling on the team name or "perception" of it

You seem obsessed with single cause-single effect here. I just think you should make it easier on yourself any time you get the chance. Increased national appeal DEFINITELY helps bring in free agents.

The only name I like better than Pelicans is Voodoo. It fits our city, state, region and is a classy name.
