Who are your favorite New Orleans jazz artists/bands?

I'm talking from Rebirth to Kermit Ruffins to Pete Fountain on clarinet. Who do y'all enjoy listening to?

For clarinet, give Evan Christopher a listen. Brass bands, try the Hot 8, Stooges Brass Band and the Dirty Dozen. . Trumpet, hard to beat Kermit but Irvin Mayfield (especially his recordings with the Latin group, Los Calientes; and the big band, New orleans Jazz Orchestra) is damn good. Delfeayo Marsalis has some great records out, and does a regular gig at Snug Harbor on Wed. nights with a big band. For vocals, got to go with John Boutte.
Also, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band has issued some tremendous records lately; the new live one (St. Peter and W. 57th) and the benefit album (with numerous guest artists like Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Dr. John, etc.).

Big Sam's Funky Nation. No doubt about it. Been watching them since i was 16 at the Funky Butt on N. Rampart across from Congo Square.

THANK YOU.
I've thought about bringing this up but didn't think there'd be enough interest. IMO it would make an interesting Band/Artist game, but would lose most of the folks on the board.
I lean to the piano players.
Favorite of all time is Professor Longhair (see avatar). Of course, he dead, so can't see him.
Tom McDermott is a quirky, highly talented pianist who puts a twist on any song unlike anyone else.
Joe Krown and Jon Cleary too.
Love Kermit Ruffins (my son was the one that played with him at the Bar Mitzvah in the last episode of "Treme").
Rebirth, Dirty Dozen, and any other N.O. Brass band I can hear. The rest of the country doesn't know what a REAL Brass band should sound like.
Bonerama totally rocks.

Total all around great show. The Bone, his dancing, and some of the best guitar you'll hear--even compared to any rock band in the city.

I was a trumpet player back in my day and will forever lean toward trumpet players. I just wanted to see what everyone else's interests were regarding N.O. jazz. I have a large collection of albums, but some of y'all named people that I'll definitely check out.
Ain't nothing better to listen to really loudly on my balcony apartment in a foreign state.

Yep, that's my boy! Quite the musician, he is. We always had to ask him to STOP practicing so we could watch TV...how fricked up is THAT!
Here's a snip of him playing Tipitina from a couple of years back when he was a mere 13 y/o.
LINK
Don't hold the intro against him...he was trying to copy note-for-note the Fess...
and to Peytonknows...there's enough Fess to go around!

Kid's got chops, for sure. Now you just have to let his teeth decay, soak his vocal chords with some rot gut booze for about 2 decades, 2 pack a day cig habit, and he'll be able to nail the "wolla, wolla, wolla" verse that Fess memorialized....
Seriously, your son is damn good.
