Agreed.
An 8 team playoff get all the BCS conferences involved (Big East no longer counts), as long at they are ranked in the top 12 BCS. It allows for 3 non-conference winners and possibly more if a conference winner isn't in the top 12. And it would allow non-AQ schools if they were in the top 10 of the BCS.
I would prefer to have the top 4 seeds at home for the first round and then uses the bowls for the remaining 3 games.

riots in athens would be had if florida made it in something like this over us. does it say in the article that it's assuming an alabama win or something?

They will have to do something about the SEC Championship Game in the new postseason. Teams will actually be trying to avoid playing that game but slipping into the top 4 like Florida this year or Alabama last year.

Good point. never thought of that.. would be an interesting dynamic to say the least

Just flip 7 and 8 and you avoid rematches and get much more compelling football to boot!
Group A
1. Notre Dame vs. 7. LSU
3. Georgia vs. 6. Kansas State
Group B
2. Alabama vs. 8. Stanford
4. Florida vs. 5. Oregon
Yes please!

There's seriously nothing wrong with this. The model didn't assume an outcome for the SECCG; obviously Alabama would be replaced by Georgia if the Bulldogs win this weekend. You have only one 1-loss team worth a shite getting left out, and that 1-loss team managed to shite the bed to the tune of a 28-point blowout loss against a team that'll be lucky to finish 7-5. Of the possible teams in this playoff, only one had a similarly bad loss, but against a team that finished 10-2. It's obvious that Kansas State should be left out after that awful performance against Baylor.
Put this way: I think it's a hell of an improvement that this playoff system makes an 11-1 Kansas State team that unarguably threw away its title hopes at Baylor the odd man out compared to the current system, which makes an 11-1 Florida team that's 4-1 against squads in the top-15 the odd man out. You can make a strong case that Florida has the best body of work this season. You can't make that case for Kansas State at all.

well except for UGA not making it because they didn't win the SEC. It matters if you're not elite. It doesn't matter to a team like Bama last year or UF this year. Do people really think UGA is more deserving of a national title shot than UF this year? UF has a 4-1 record against top 15 teams. Thats pretty damn good.

Their has to be a stipulation for winning your conference or the conference championship games need to go away. Teams like Georgia this year shouldn't be penalized for having to play an extra game.

which imo is the reason we need an 8 team playoff. the 5 major conference winners get in, one non-aq school (if they are ranked at certain place, kind of like the bcs 16 thing) and 2 wild cards.
Exactly what I hope for one day

8 team playoff
6 winners of BCS conferences
2 at-large based on BCS ranking
if non-BCS qualifier ranks above conference champion, they take their spot in the playoffs

that's what i'd do but we need 8 teams. somewhere along the line conference championship games are expendible. 16 games for college kids is wrong.

There is a natural stipulation if both teams are undefeated like Alabama and Florida were in both 2008 and 2009. The loser still had an amazing year and would make an 8 team playoff. Both Bama and Florida met in #1 vs #2 games those years. If an SEC title game loss makes you a 2 loss team and knocks you out of the playoff then tough. Alabama wouldn't deserve a spot in an 8 team playoff this year if they lose to Georgia imho. The 5 automatic bids with ranking stipulations and 3 wild card spots to the highest ranked teams that didn't win their conference protects the relevance of winning your conference and teams like 2011 Alabama, 2012 Florida, and 2008 Texas from getting left out. It's by far the best comprise of both suggested playoff philosophies.

Why don't they wait until all the friggin games have been played??
ETA: ok it has some assumptions.

I like that idea, actually.

With an 8 team playoff you would have to eliminate CCGs.
