The man had not coached in college football since 1992. And then he was an assistant coach at Pitt.

The Vols are in a tough spot. They play Alabama and Florida every year. They are talent starved state.

Philip Fulmer used to win at a time when he could recruit nationally. Towards the end, his recruiting dried up. Mark Ritch shut down Georgia, Saban shut down Louisiana.

Only someone who can recruit nationally and loves to recruit can win there. Jon Gruden, with next to no recruiting experience, will have a hard time.

College football is about recruiting, developing, mentoring and disciplining. Throw in trick plays, gimmicky offenses etc.

Pro-Football is about practice and execution. Its a totally different game.

That's why Nick Saban ( who is by the far the best college coach every ) was walking disaster in the NFL. And thats why Charlie Weiss with three super bowl rings, is mediocre college coach.

Gruden talk makes me scratch my head.

Tennessee needs to recruit nationally. Jon Gruden is one of the most well known football coaches in the country, regardless of his college experience.

He can get an invite to almost any football recruits home, especially kids on the offensive side fo the ball.

When Saban was hired the exposure Alabama eceived from the media (both good and bad) fueled the monster that Alabama has become. Jon Gruden can have the same effect on Tennessee - you can gurantee that ESPN will be there almost year round.

THis is not that complicated.

Coaches who are successful in the NFL are usually great coaches. They are tireless workers and many are protégés of legendary head coaches. On a weekly basis, they scheme against the best coaches in the world. In college, Gruden would mainly scheme against crappy coaches.

Recruiting is not rocket science. High school kids want top play in the NFL. Gruden would instantly have more credibility in that department than any coach in the country. He's also charismatic, and kids will recognize his name.

He would be a home run hire for anyone.

I said the same thing about Arkansas. He might be a great hire, but the odds are no better than getting some hotshot from DII. It's a complete hail mary.

Arkansas fans are stupid through, what is TNs excuse.

myth that Tennessee can't recruit is totally overblown.

Georgia is top 3~top4 talent rich state in the nation and UGA is the flagship school there right? UGA always had top recruiting classes and UT stood its ground head-to-head against UGA in recruiting

Tennessee was recruiting kids out of every state during Fulmers hay day. Gruden would easily surpass those glory days in recruiting. Tennessee is a great place to go to college and play football. They just really need a great hire.

Because he would be a recruiting machine once he sat down in the living rooms of a young man's home and showed him the Super Bowl ring he won with Dungy's team when they were 5-7 years old.

Then he would have every QB recruit in the nation lined up at UT's door once he explained his record of how he took 40 year old men and used them as starting NFL QBs as he was never able to develop one while in the NFL.

Then he will tell Haslam and UT fans how the Bucs traded draft pics and cash to Oakland to get him and he is like the only coach that a team has ever done that for.

It really isn't that hard to figure out.

I don't feel like you're the most intelligent individual, or at least you don't observe. While Saban certainly succeeds in the recruiting department, year in and year out what makes his teams elite is their execution on Saturday, an execution of their practice.

While I'll agree that college and professional football are different, to say that a person who is geared towards execution can't be successful is absurd. Surround that coach with a staff who are excellent recruiters and you have a recipe for success.
