Does playing campaign mode of a FPS on hardest mode make you better online?

I've become more of a casual FPS player as I've gotten older. I'll just play through the campaign on Normal, and try online play once I beat the game.
I get my arse handed to me online, and lose interest quickly.
I know playing on the hardest setting still won't simulate real people and campers, but would it force me to hone accuracy and strategy?
I'm just worried it would end up pissing me off more.
Any thoughts on strategies of getting better at FPS games?

I really think the only thing you can do is play more online. Which sucks for the casual gamer with a family, but it is what it is.

Pretty much true, which is why I am not big into FPS

Absolutely not. If anything it conditions you to circumstances different than what you find online.

That's about what I thought. I've always been decent when I would play in LAN parties, but that was like 10 years ago.
Internet gaming has evolved so much since then, that I know I will never be competitive unless I devote my life to it.
I do like to play online at times, but it just has become far too frustrating.

None of us here devote our lives to gaming (except Sweat) and we do well but for the most part keep up with the games in a series. I struggled with BLOPS II because I skipped MW3 but my experiences with the other 4 games helped me overcome that. It would be very hard to come in and do well if this your first online fps in a while.

I know a lot of it has to do with learning the maps. I got nearly unbeatable at Goldeneye once I learned the maps.
Also, I'm pretty lazy when it comes to messing with my settings, and I've become overly dependent on being able to snap to a target.

Hell to the no.
Everyone else has hit the nail on the head. You get better as you gain map awareness and better reflexes and reaction time. All of that comes with practice in actual online games. Just be patient, you'll get better and better.

It helps a little, just for the fundamentals like accuracy, learning the controls, learning guns, etc. But like everyone else said, the AI can't simulate what people will do online, and you gotta learn the maps. Learning the maps is one of the biggest things, because no matter how good you are, you'll get destroyed if you don't know where you are or where you're going, where people like to hide, spawn points, etc. etc.

Campaign doesn't help you in the slightest in online play. Playing against AI is 10000x easier than playing against another living, breathing human. Play online a lot, and except to get destroyed at first.

No. The computer doesn't dropshot

What is a dropshot?

playing on the hardest difficulty is much more of a grind. Once you learn how to take out an enemy, you follow that same pattern again and again. Not much in the way of variability.
success online is about adapting to the dipshit strategies du jour and carving out a niche for yourself.

What helps the most at first is running a private match vs hard bots on all the maps. Get used to the maps. Once I memorize a map, I'm hell on wheels. Before that, I'm toast.

I always play Halo on legendary first. I don't find that it makes me better at reacting to people online, but it does make my accuracy better.
