Who has actually ever shot a fish in a barrel?
Posted on 11/8/12 at 1:14 pm to fishen4life
i've never hunted before but i feel like that's almost cheating. doesn't seem near as rewarding as hunting and killing one with no help

I hunt on my FIL land that is 600 acres high fenced and say what you want it is still deer hunting. You do not always see deer out there and they will get nocturnal just like free ranging deer. The only people that gun hunt out there are kids. Its not like people would think.

Im not against a 20,000 acre high fence. Still not anything close to killing a free range buck.
Those little 500 acre high fences are like shooting cattle. I dont care to ever hunt one or shoot a deer chained to a tree. Same thing to me.

We have a larger ranch that is high fenced and adjacent we have 100 acres that is low fenced. It is definitely more exciting hunting the low fenced just because you never know what your going to see....and there are no restrictions what I can and cant shoot. Hunting inside the fence you get to see what all your hard work and management amounts to. We have put a lot into our place and are proud of the deer we have.

you would fence less than a few hundred acres? that's fish in a barrel, man.
It really depends, if the acreage is fairly small(less than 200 maybe) and the surrounding lands are overhunted, not managed or you are dealing with a poaching problem you'd probably have little choice but to fence or accept that you'll likely never see that quality of deer you want. Tough call and in all likelihood a decision I'll never have to make.

It's a great way to get some axis or siki meat. Part of our lease in TX was high fenced and the axis I brought to the skinning rack made the two whitetails look like midgets. Great meat.

no problem with that. even 5-10k is ok. 5-600 acres is silly. no doubt they will produce big bucks, and I'd blast one in a heart beat. Folks spend a lot on money on it and want protect blah blah blah....I get it. Just not the same.

The good thing about those places, if you wound one all you have to do is check the corners.

my uncle wants to shoot a cow so bad. I have no idea why. We drive passed them on the way to the land and he stares them down saying, "one day..." I just hope im around when it happens.

No brawl, just a guy who doesnt like my political stance deciding to run his mouth about me when I'm not around to defend myself.

We have one axis buck left some we put out there a long arse time ago. He is old as dirt but my dad wont let us shoot him "because your mother likes seeing him"

I could too if someone wants to pay.
True story, I was part of a group of guys that got paid to let a trophy boar go with plot hounds and catch dogs on him as soon as he left the gate of the pen and then let a kid walk up and shoot him. A man paid 800 bucks for that to happen. The kid never knew we had let him go. He thought it was a real hunt.
