I've never cared much for the bond movies since goldeneye but the reviews have me intrigued. Does this one stand on its own or do I have to check out casino royale and quantum of solace first?

It's a standalone.

If you haven't seen Casino Royale, watch it.

You don't need to for Skyfall, you need to for you.

I guess I'm the minority here as I hated it. If this is the direction Bond is taking, then this franchise is dead to me.

It had a more coherent story than QoS (despite being rather simple, unimaginative and generic compared to previous Bond standards), but other than that, both films had very few Bond elements and didn't bother to follow the same formula that has kept this franchise running for 50 years.

Enough with all the Bourne/M:I/24/Tom Clancey mimicking for frick's sake.

Why would the studio do that?
To make you happy?

You just admitted you're in the minority.

Just saw it. Was very disappointed. It had no substance or depth to it at all, and it just didn't feel like a bond flick. I was so pumped. Very shallow film, and it went on way too long. I have no idea how it got such good reviews. Very, very average

I'm sad to hear this, since you and I tend to have the same taste in films. I'm a huge Bond nerd and was pumped up as hell about seeing it, but the Chinese assholes delayed the film til February 2 days before it was supposed to be released; I was unbelievably pissed. I'm really hoping you're wrong on this.

And was Javier Bardem's performance as great as everyone said it was? All the reviewers are saying he is without question the greatest Bond villain ever.

I plan on seeing it. I thought QOS was okay, but given the writers strike, I'll give them a mulligan.

I've learned that there is absolutely no reason to take reviews read on this site seriously. Some pretentious bastards here. Love you guys, though.
