I guarantee you more then 1% of the people who would go to see Star Wars VII would have read the books.
I'm really starting to hate that word now.

I won't, sorry I'm not ruining good books just because some movie came out. Sorry I'm not that shallow :)
How about this: Just treat the moment the Death Star blew up that the timeline split, sort of like what they did with the Star Trek Reboot. You still get to keep your book timeline, and we get a new timeline.

Why would they need to work around them in the story. Why is following some of the books to a point bad? Have you even read them? You make it sound like the books were just completely God awful.
Because that forces them to work with characters that the vast majority of the audience is not familiar with. I don't know about any of these characters from the books.
They could be good characters, but if I were to write the sequel series, I'd want to make up my own characters and not be forced to work within the confines of what some other science fiction writer wrote. What if I wanted Luke's son to be a different character entirely? Should a book that have sold 500,000 copies stand in my way?

By that same logic, having Luke be Vader's son is stupid. Why is it a big deal that we focus on Luke's family, when that has been almost the entire focus of Star Wars? It seems like it works.
And like I said, I agree that there should be a connection - just not the numerous annoying ones we've come to expect.

average of $5,083,000/book
average cost of a book $10
500,000 copies sold/book on average
How many people on average have gone to see SW?

The only canon when it comes to movies is what you see on the screen. End of story. Good bye, good night, tip your waiter, and may the force be with you.

I think it should be the exact opposite though: Instead of having to redeem a failure of a father who failed the universe, Instead make it living up to one who saved the universe and will go down as one of the most beloved men in history.
Focus on the heavy burden laid down upon him. Granted, I wouldn't make him the main character, just merely the mentor to our new hero, whose duty it is to save the universe.

Pretty good guess right there.

I think one of the biggest mistakes was casting an unknown in the main role. I had seen Taylor Kitsch on Friday Night Lights but, besides those few who actually watched the show, no one knew who he was, and they marketed him like he was some bad arse action star. Every movie he has starred in this year has been a domestic flop.
Well, honestly, think about it, how many badass action stars do we have in their 20s and 30s? I think Chris Hemsworth may be shaping up into one, but most our action stars are now in their 40s and beyond.

yeah, but you know that's an average
from what I can tell, as of 2002, "heir of the empire" was the best selling at approx 5 million copies with an estimated 30-100k copies/year each additional year.
It's the book that takes place "5 years after" RotJ....so I'm guessing people bought that one to find out what happened next.....and not as many bought "New hope","ESB", "RotJ"...because they already saw them as films, so what's the point.
for whatever reason they don't keep stats on books like they do movies.

Chris Pine, Chris Evans (lots of damn Chrises), Channing Tatum (has action potential, he definitely gets the ladies all excited), Josh Hutcherson, JGL, Ryan Reynolds, Armie Hammer (Will break out next year in The Lone Ranger), Joshua Dallas (Emerging now), Luke Evans, Taylor Lautner (Big longshot there), Kitt Harrington, Sam Claflin, Benjamin Walker, Aaron Johnson, and the Last Son of Krypton himself Henry Cavill are all out there. Of course some of these guys are bigger names right now than others, but all have the potential to be big action stars for the next decade or so if they take the right projects.
Then of course you have some guys in their mid to late 30's like Gerard Butler, Michael Fassbender, Joe Manganiello and Logan-Marshall Green who have been in action films already that have a few good years left.

You're mistaking actors that have been in action movies for action stars. I'm talking about people like Arnold, Stallone, Willis, and Norris. There is no such thing as a current action star, aside from perhaps Hemsworth, and he could get derailed quickly into being a non-action star.

Those guys are a special breed. I hate to use this phrase, but they just aren't going to make'm like they use to.

SIAP, but apparently Episode 7's plot will be an "original story," according to someone from LucasFilm: LINK
ETA: Meaning it won't follow the events described in the Thrawn Trilogy.

Just thought of some great shite that's going to happen because of this:
1) No more retarded, pointless changes to the film by Lucas.
2) We're probably getting a BluRay release of the Original Trilogy unaltered.
Also found out that Pixar cost Disney 7.4 billion dollars, and I'm surprised Pixar is worth almost twice what Lucasfilm is, especially since this purchase is coming with ILM.
