we have tickets to the alabama game 11/3/12 and have never attended a game in baton rouge (or any sec venue for that matter).
we leave san diego on friday 11/2/12 and will stay the night in new orleans. everything from saturday morning forward is open and dedicated to lsu football.
i am hoping some people on this board can give us pointers on how to best enjoy the experience of gameday. i have seen the fan guide provided by the university but was looking for more specifics from people that go to these games on a regular basis (parking, tailgating, gotchas).

But really, hope you have fun. The whole campus is a tailgate and will be especially on 11/3.

Get ready!
Oh and they do actually sell popcorn at the game in case you get hungry or want to throw it at some Bama players...
Enjoy!!!

Park behind the law school on fraternity row.
Tailgate on the parade grounds.
You have to eat at the Chimes on gameday and go to Louisiana Laignappe before you leave.

Get to Campus early and wear comfortable shoes so you can walk from tailgate to tailgate.
I might try to get by the Chimes at the north gate on Highland road for some Gumbo to get the day started right. There is also some shopping for game day stuff across the street and a decent coffee house. Have fun!

1. Eat early breakfast in NO. I recommend Luke or Palace Cafe
2. Drive to BR
3. Stop for liquor. Get something that is easy to tote around.
4. Lunch at the chimes
5. Park and just work your way through campus.
6. Visit mike the tiger and just hang out around there unless you know where others are tailgating
7. Watch team, band come down the hill
8. ?
9. Profit

Just let everyone you meet know you are fron San Diego and this is your first SEC game. All will go all out of their way to convert you to LSU football. There will be pleanty of food and beverages offered. Two words to remember, "Tiger bait". That will become clear as you get acclimated to the campus and culture of south Louisiana. As you leave and someone says "come back here, ya'll"...that does not mean come back at that point, it means you are welcome to come back on your next visit.

Son of a bitch. This is the very definition of "go big or go home"
Mad props.
What colors will you be wearing?

man, if you do this right, you guys are gonna have the time of your life...I had a batchelor party of about 8 guys from New York City tailgate beside me at the USCe game last weekend and they were blown away...
a common pitfall is to drink too much in the quarter on Friday night....be careful not to do that, as you will have a damn long day on Saturday...
be very conscious of the direction that you will need to head after the game when you chose your parking space...if you are going back to NO, I would suggest parking in the hayfield lot...it is free and fairly close to tiger stadium...you'll walk by alex box (baseball) and really the first part of campus that you will see will be tiger stadium...and you can go south after the game...
expect just about the most casual affair you can imagine...can't tell what the weather will be like, but dress appropriately...if it is hot, a tee shirt, shorts and flip flops are perfectly acceptable...
bring an ice chest with something to eat after the game...I didn't get out of the parking lot until nearly 1 AM after last weeks game...I sometimes even fire the grill up and cook again while I wait for traffic to clear...during the day, you can find some cajun food for sale outside and inside of the stadium along with the typical stadium food...if you smell/see somehting good at a tailgate, just walk up and ask what it is...work into the convrsation that you are from CA and that you haven't had that dish before and soon your belly will be full of it...
tired of typing for now, but I'll post some more later...
ETA: might want to add a little something more descriptive to your thread title (i.e. need gameday tips) so your thread doesn't get anchored...

Numero Uno - get a map and mark where you park your car. You will never find it at 11PM at night unless you park in the big lots by the stadium which is a mistake anyway.
All afternoon you can walk around and visit tailgates. Just act dumb and people will take you in and care for you...
Might want to visit Mike the VI at the NW end of the stadium. He's a really cool cat. Hopefully they will bring him in the stadium for the game.
For 7:00 kick off probably at:
4:50PM LSU Team gets off bus to walk down North Stadium Drive or Victory Hill. Chance to get up close and personal with some of the players.
5:10 PM The Golden Band from Tiger Land marches down same route and into the PMAC.
Be in your seats about 30 - 40 min before scheduled kickoff to get the pregame experience. At about 20 min before kickoff band marches out and starts pregame show, teams come out of locker rooms, and coin toss.
After that get ready for some head knockin!

Wow.
Not picking on you at all, but you really have no idea what you're in for.
It'll be loud, it'll be crazy, the energy will be insane, and you haven't even gotten inside the stadium yet!
Find a parking place EARLY! I can't stress that enough. They will go super fast for that game.
Go up to tailgates and just talk. Introduce yourself and tell people it's your first time here. You'll be offered all the food and drink you can stand.
Wear your LSU gear and just talk to people. I'll be there!
Make sure you see the team and the band come down the hill.
Players should walk down the hill around 4:50, the band about 20 min later or so. It'll be right there in front of the stadium, on the north end, in between the stadium and the PMAC. You'll see everyone lined up.
That is a must do. Make sure you see Mike in his 'house" as I like to call it. He sometimes doesn't feel like getting in the trailer and going out on the field but who knows.
Have fun! You're going to be blown away!

I'll be there for the game against Pure Unadulterated Evil as well and I welcome you, a Californian, going to my beloved LSU for a game. Nothing on the West Coast compares to college football in the South and LSU is most special. Every person I've taken to an LSU game from outside of the South is amazed with the entire weekend and all the tradition that makes LSU football so very great and unique.

Where your San Diego State gear free food drinks etc.. All day. We're glad to have you here and will treat you to the time of your life.

Be sure to be in your seats way before Pregame - it promises to be INSANE. TGBFTL playing Hold That Tiger/Pregame Salute is the most underrated pregame pageantry in any sport.
Bring some cough drops. Your vocal chords will thank you.
The noise emanating from Death Valley on the night of 11/3 will make Halloween 1959/Cannon and the '79 USC game sound like a Sign Language Workshop in the Helen Keller Room of the basement of Nicholson Library - during spring break...
