never read the book. Concerning the beacons, so all these guys do is sit on top of mountains for hundreds or thousands of years waiting for a fire to be lit in the distance?

yep, that was the most rapid means of communication in antiquity. The Chinese had an identical system along the Great Wall of China that could send a message thousands of miles to Beijing in just a matter of hours.

How'd you like to be that poor MF that has to sit on top of a snow covered mountain waiting to light that fire (a once in a lifetime event)? That would suck balls.

Yep, but they have more enemies than Mordor. Rohan has to deal with a bunch of wildings and Gondor has to deal with the Haradrim to the South. Plus they're all in a huge war right now to where they were certainly manning them at that point.

Actually in the book they didn't have the beacons, if I remember correctly. The had a red arrow carried by a horseman to deliver the message. I think they had the beacons only in the movie, but correct me if I'm wrong.

There were 13 beacons in the movie but only 7 in the book. The red arrow described in the books was not mentioned in the film.

I am sure there was a near by town. Probably go up there and stay for a week with your buddy, then get replaced. Head back in to town, be with your family. One week on, three weeks off (I am sure it worked this way). Its not like they were missing out on internet access or luxuries of life, it was freakin' middle earth. A lot worse places they could have been. I'd sign up for that duty.

Obviously, I have no idea. Just arguing one side cause I can't sleep.

In fact your US Military still does this on all priority resources and places like the Korean DMZ. They sit on perimeters in 8 hour or longer shifts and just wait for the alarm to be raised.

Yeah, but just think if you get to be one of the ones that actually light the beacons. Thats something to tell your grandchildren, bro.

I can't imagine people getting to some of these beacons much less living near them. A couple look like they are literally on top of Mount Everest!

The fun part gets to be resetting the whole thing now that they've been used, particularly the Mount Everest region.

I was amazed how every one was paying really good attention to the nearest beacon. Nobody got caught sleeping or just not giving a frick.

If you're with another guy bullshitting having a beer, I don't see how it would miss your eyes for long. I mean it went dark at one point, so I'm guessing it took a good 20 to 30 minutes for at least one tower to catch on.

As far as communication in emergency situations perhaps not. There was lot of talk about shooting down any ravens leaving a castle during sieges in Westeros. Kind of hard to shoot down a signal fire.
