Sean Connery - 'The Lord of the Rings
I could totally see this
so could I. That's why i was asking which role. I like him in the kind of "mentor" role.

I feel like Will Smith could have pulled off Neo, but it would have been a departure from the roles people were familiar with him doing at the time. Depp in Ferris Bueller would have been interesting. Connery would have been pretty awesome, not so much as Morpheus.

The only ones that make sense are Costner as Dufresne, and Depp as Ferris. The rest suck and I'm glad they didn't turn out

So grateful Matt Damon did not ruin two movies I love.

John Wayne turned down the role of Marshal Matt Dillon for fear of being type cast as a cowboy.
Not really true...He was never really considered and was never offered the role. Wayne did recommend James Arness for the role. Others who auditioned for the role was Richard Boone, Denver Pyle, Robert Conrad & Raymond Burr.
John Wayne was however offered the role of Dirty Harry and that was after it was turned down by Frank Sinatra. I'm glad neither worked out, it's hard to picture anyone else.

Molly Ringwald - 'Pretty Woman'
I could see Julianne Moore playing this roll. Just not fricking Richard Gere.

I think most of the roles were legendary because of who played them

True. It's the actors that make them.

John Wayne was also offered the role of the Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles. He decline saying the movie was too dirty for his image, but that he'd be the first in line to see the movie.

What was she doing at the time to warrant turning down major roles like those?

Kevin Costner - Andy Dufresne in 'The Shawshank Redemption'
Thank God this did not happen!

I really can't see Emily Blunt as Black Widow
So a minor role in Iron Man 2 = Legendary Role?

This is going a ways back but Gary Cooper was producer David O. Selznick's first choice for the role of Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind. When Cooper turned down the role, he was passionately against it. He is quoted as saying, "Gone with the Wind is going to be the biggest flop in Hollywood history. I’m glad it’ll be Clark Gable who’s falling flat on his nose, not me".
Also, Alfred Hitchcock wanted him to star in Foreign Correspondent (1940) and Saboteur (1942). Cooper later admitted he had made a "mistake" in turning down the director.
