quote:Yes that happens. Pats did it a few years back. Plenty of college teams have done it.
I'm talking about lining up in shotgun and the defense thinks your going for it and lines up in a 5-2 formation and the ball just goes way over anybody who is ready for it.

Correct was watching MNF. But as long as you don't cross LOS.
But hope they don't fair catch it and free kick for 3 or the best rule...
If lined up not in shotgun and center snaps but doesn't touch offensive player it's no fumble.

I can remember Spurrier doing this against Arkansas while still with Gators. The Gators got sacked and had a personal foul. 3rd and damn near 30, he punted it.

Boise did it alot with Kellen Moore. I wanna say Auburn did it with cam against LSU

at my high school our coach had us go into shotgun every fourth down as our punt formation aptly named "Gun Punt" because our QB was also the punter. basically teams had to remain in defensive formations and just send a safety deep but after a while everyone pretty much realized we never went for it
i think we went for it like 8 times but we did get them every time

We practiced quick kicks at my Hs.
On punt return, when you were watching for a fake, did you call it "silly rabbit"?

My favorite is to line up for a 50+ yard field goal, snap it to the kicker and let him pooch punt. There is no return man back to fair catch it.

Some of my other HS football terminology:
Oskey! - call out on D if you get a pick
Peter! - on punt return, get away from ball and do not return, let it bounce
snap count had code words - "Bama" meant on 1, "Georgia" on 2, "Auburn" on 3

nah, our coaches were lazy as shite and actually just plain bad
our cadence every play was three numbers followed by either white or black and if the first number was 8 then the next 2 were the play and white was left and black what right. it took so long for our QB to do it 2x that we would have at least 2-3 delay of games per contest . for fakes we would just say watch the fake, we were pretty blunt about it and just screamed what we saw

The snap is a backward pass....it can't be a fumble until someone gains possession. If he loses possession afterward, THEN it's a fumble.
One play people get confused about is the 2pt try. If the QB muffs the snap, ANY player can pick it up and advance. If the QB gains possession of the snap and then muffs a handoff or backward pass to a back, only the QB can pick up the ball and advance it. (4th down fumble rule is in effect on a try)
The kicking game and try for point have their own set of rules within the rules.

You can quick kick on any down in any formation behind the line - rarely happens but sometimes strategic reasons dictate having the ball is more dangerous than not having it.
Snow Bowl
“The strategy of both teams became the same: run a play or two into the line – straight in – and then kick, preferably on third down because if a fumble occurred a fourth down for kicking would be available.”
45 punts in the game.
Michigan won 9-6 with just 27 yards of total offense (all rushing) and zero first downs in the entire game.

Randall Cunningham once did a quick kick on 3rd down and it went 91 yards.
