Just had Ditka on and him and Golic were talking about how the record goes to show how dominant Unitas was and how this is now a different league. When Unitas had the record they were only throwing the ball 10 times a game...blah blah blah. Also said that we could see this record broken again in the current state of the league. Greenberg, who I normally disagree with all the time, says that it is a shame that people are trying to diminish the record. He also went on to say that if the league is so different now then why didn't Brady, Farve, Manning, Young, Marino and other greats break the record already.... SIAP

I really didn't like the way those two little cocksuckers last night downplayed the accomplishment.
Instead of giving props to Drew, they talked about how it is going to be broken again later this season.
Once it is broken, it isn't the recore anymore. Drew is setting record now, and that's the one Brady will have to beat.

Didn't Unitas throw a lot for his time, too?
Posted on 10/8/12 at 7:56 am to Hoodoo Man
Yes.
I don't understand why the comparison has to be made. Unitas was revolutionary for his time and Brees has been great during his time too. Why can't they just leave it as that?

Oh take off your homer glasses. Michaels had a lot of really nice things to say.
"There are records, and there are records. This belongs in the latter category."

It was more impressive that Unitas did it when he did. But I also agree that if it wasn't a big deal today it would have been broken years ago. I hope Brees puts it out of reach and hold it for as long as Unitas, but I doubt it.

Look, I get that the game has changed to favor passing, especially now. But as much as the rules have changed, so have the players. Sure, you can't hardly touch a receiver now. But they also didn't have CB's as athletic as they do now. Sure you cant hit a QB, but Unitas also didn't have 350lb D-linemen that run a 4.6 chasing after him either.
This record is more a testament to consistency than anything else, regardless of the rules and how the game has changed. If it was so easy, there would've been more than two guys come within 10 games of it of over the last 60 years.
IMO by the time Drew is ready to hang his cleats up, he will be in the discussion as not only a sure first ballot HOF'er, but as one of the GOATs.

This was great for Drew and I'm proud he's a Saint. But, if he were to not throw a TD in the next game, the record could be broken this year by Brady. IMO, that alone proves that the record isn't really as impressive now as it was then.
It reminds me of the TE yardage record last year.
Graham broke the record.
Gronkowski broke the record.
Graham broke the record.
Gronkowski broke the record.
All within 4 hours.
It just isn't impressive when someone can break the record during the same season, IMO. Congrats to Drew though.

further proof this isn't that impressive:
Duante Culpepper is tied for 10th...

Back then you didn't have a guy who is 6 ft trying to throw over lineman who are 6.5 plus. Its amazing drew can even see his receivers.

It's a 52 year old record. Give the guy some credit. And Brady may be close but he is also one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game.

I agree with everything you said except for calling Drew a farm animal.
Posted on 10/8/12 at 8:42 am to crazyLSUfan
One could also say that the defensive schemes have evolved to be much tougher than in Unitas day.

look, i'm happy for Drew. But, it isn't that impressive when you are throwing the ball 40+ times a game and there is another player who is within reach of the record this season.
If Brees were to not throw a TD next game, is there anyone who really thinks that Brady wouldn't break the record later this year?
Secondly, this is my opinion. You don't have to like it. Just ignore it.

During Unitas's career, teams threw the ball 23 times per game.
Now it's about 35 times per game. So twelve additional attempts.
Now, they completed passes at a much LOWER rate back then, for various reasons.
But it's interesting that it took 52 years for this record to get broken and people are downplaying it.

Do you people watch the same game I watch? Or do you just disregard what is actually said, and just hear what you want to hear?
The broadcast last night was EXTREMELY complementary of Brees all game. Hell, even when the Chargers were winning by 10 in the 3rd they were still putting up comparison stats between Brees and Unitas. They mentioned that Tom Brady had (I think) a 37 game streak going, which like it or not, is a fact. They also said that Brady will likely eclipse the 47 game mark, but he may never pass Brees if Brees keeps going.

I called this shite last week. About to go bump thread
You just knew they'd mention Brady and mention how the nfl is different than it was then.
