I don't know why in Zombie movies, no one ever goes to the coast. It seems you could get a boat, and load it with supplies, and set up an island community.
The prison seems cool, but it could be overrun. Then it's too big for a small group to hold. Then you have live prisoners. How do you leave survivors behind? But would you want to add prisoners to your group?

Right, with the fences as their defense they could have picked off all the walkers as they went through the prison yard without ever firing a shot. That would be pretty boring TV though
Yeah, but at least with Rick in charge it seems like their decisions have gone from stupid, to less smart. Apparently over the winter they were given plenty of opportunities to hone their skills and strategies when it comes to killing zombies.
I think this is going to add some great drama for when things eventually go wrong, because it won't be their fault as much.
Even Maggie just taking the axe off the firewood pile and running back to the car instead of trying to kill the zombie right there showed they've picked up more survival skills. Last season, they would have tried to fight them off until they got overrun, now they just gtfo and live to fight another day.
ETA: When I say things going wrong not being their fault, I mean because they're making better decisions, not because I know what's going to happen.

How long before the convicts start raping the women?

Read World War Z. There's a major flaw in the plan you're not thinking of.
I really, really liked this episode. Sure, it's more logical to wait by the door and slowly kill all of them, but that would make for crappy drama. And zombie kills are fun (loved Maggie getting excited by her stab technique). Also, I like how Rick is becoming more unstable and more, for lack of a better word, fascist. Always found that an interesting bit of the comics -- how people slowly change.

My guess is as soon as they're in the same room.

I just released a new zombie serial on Kindle if anyone is interested. Walking Dead-ish in nature and will be updated with new content every quarter.

Last night was like zombie heaven. Walking Dead season 3 premiere, then talking dead a little later. Max Brooks was being interviewed on CNN or CNN Headline News or something. And then Shaun of the Dead came on MTV late night.
Zombie overload. Though, the person interviewing Brooks was bit of a dolt and wouldn't let him get to his points, so I turned it off pretty quickly.

I'm guessing these will be the wrongly accused or misunderstood type prisoners, maybe one bad apple they'll have to kill

I'm kind of disappointed that no one picked up on my joke a few pages ago about the inhabitants of the prison. It was a call back to South Park.

I think it is based on what little we've seen of it. Even if it's not all that gun firing will surely lead more to them.

You only need to hold a portion of it(ie: the food, somewhere to sleep, weapons, and the food). You can let the rest go to hell.

You don't. Either they join with your group or you kill them. When the world goes to shite I really don't care if you robbed a bank, stole a car, or whatever. The more people the better. Just give them the knifes and your orignal people the guns until proven otherwise.

It wouldn't be hard for a small group to hold the prison against mindless zombies, but if they encounter problems from other living groups they would be in trouble.

Depends on how large the other group is. We know right now that there are some people still within the prison. How many? Who knows...but that'll either be a danger or a blessing depending on how to go about it.
If that large group we keep seeing decides to come...then Ricks needs to get the hell out the way.

recidivism, you really want felonious males near your wife,GF and daughters?

For those who are kind of wondering about the Carl-Beth relationship, they apparently addressed this at Comic Con. Carl is 13 and Beth is 16 so the age difference is not that great. The actor playing Carl hinted that there would be romance between him and Beth during the convention.

What did they do to get there? If they killed someone then no, but if they did something like say money laundering(sp) then I really don't think you have to worry about them.

I thought this governor dude was going to be already running the prison

Maybe he is, and these are just his men. If so then I predict a clashing of two groups next episode.

I'd be pretty pissed if I had to guard the prison and couldn't live in swanky Woodbury.

from what I could gather from the season teaser it looks like he's running his own group that lori and that sword chick encounter
