No kidding sherlock, but it was his job to hire competent coaches and he didn't do that. When he hired DiNardo he could have gotten Mack Brown, who wanted the job and had ties to the area but Dean wasn't willing to pay market value, so Brown stayed at UNC when he was making good money and had ZERO pressure, waiting for a better opportunity. The next guy on Dean's list was Pat Sullivan, who was coaching at TCU. He was fired after going 1-10 in 97. His successor at TCU, Dennis Francione went 7-5, 8-4 and 10-2 before being hired by Alabama. Sullivan was then OC for 8 years at UAB, he's now at Samford. Good eye for coaching talent there Joe

Hallman made pigs fly by beating Bama in 93'

First, my name isn't Sherlock, secondly, I agree with you mostly. Anyone who has ever hired someone knows that you really don't know about that new hire until they start. I am not a Joe Dean fan at all, but those coaches failed not because of Joe Dean. They failed because they simply because could not coach. Hallman being by far the worst one.

Red head from Fox. I've seen this photo before. Is it legit or is it her doing a prank off-air in front of a colleague that got out? I have worked with her.

Bob Brodhead started the circus like activities in the mid-80ies, Joe Dean couldn't pick a football coach any better than he could drive, and the LSU BOS were clueless.
1980 to 2000, save a few yrs here and there, were a freaking disaster on the field and off.
Living though that clusterf*** period makes me ohhhhhhh soooooooo grateful to Mr. Saban, Mr. Miles, and Mr. Emmert.

I didn't follow all the details of who hired who and who wanted to come to LSU etc
What I do remember is watching Fla. ST and Miami dominate with a ton of Louisiana kids on their roster...there might have not been a lot of all americans but they had a ton of kids from La playing a lot while LSU sucked...

I was in junior high in the early to mid 90's but I remember
Bobby Bowden coming to Louisiana getting star players
to come to Fla St. He took players like Dunn, Minor, and
Javon walker out of Lsu's backyard. Those three players
could have made an impact alone.

Why didnt LSU just hire Arnsparger as the AD instead of letting him go to Florida in that same capacity?
Hadnt Broadhead been forced out as AD at that point?

I think the point you are missing is that Dean limited his choices because he was unwilling to spend what was needed to upgrade the program. As a result he was left with lesser/unproven options as HC. Sure, you can do all your due diligence and the guy can still bomb out. Lots of guys that looked liked they'd be great coaches have failed. The problem with Dean is he was willing to settle, not to sound like a broken record, but he hire DiNardo over Brown, because DiNardo was willing to take less. You get what you pay for and thank God Mark Emmert step up and spent the money.

Yes, Broadhead was gone. Part of the reason was Dale Brown did not want the Football Coach to be AD and he had a lot of political allies. Notice Joe Dean's background.
Some one mentioned Broadhead bringing the circus. Yeah the events surrounding his dismissal was a cluster frick. But he was a freaking visionary. Way ahead of his time with stuff like in stadium ads, PPV, TigerVision, season ticket seat donations. Oh and he hired some damn good coaches: Skip Bertman, Pat Henry and Sue Gunter.
ETA: All LSU fans should read Broadhead's book. Sure its one sided, but still pretty eye opening.

Simple solution:
Joe "I spend no dough" Dean + Curley "dumb as mud" Hallman = disaster.
Archer, btw was no where near ready to be a head coach wayyy over his head.
Dinardo was a great guy but once again LSU shopping on a budget.

Mike Archer's inability to recruit worth a damn
Then four years of Hudson Hallman.
Then four more of Ge-rry Ge-rry Ge-rry.
If DiNardo would have just replaced his talented DB Coach Ron Case (Left to join Mack Browns's staff at North Carolina) and DC Carl Reese (Left to be John Mackovic's DC at Texas) with coaches of equal talent, he may still be the coach at L.S.U.. I seem to recall some coach that wrote the book "Complete Linebacking" being implicated in a lot of the DiNardo downfall. Just can't say ot type his name out. Rymes with Stew Pepper.
Joe Dean.

I really think the Prop 48 thing set a lot of SEC schools back. We've got some of the worst test scores in the country here and it got harder to get kids in. I don't think LSU really figured out how to recruit around those restrictions until Saban.
If not for Prop 48, I think the SEC's era of dominance would have started a bit earlier (well, Prop 48 and the era of rules violations). By the early-mid 80s, SEC schools were fully utilizing all the good players they could get, meaning if they were going to have an all-black defense and a black QB, so be it. The last hurdle was dealing with the academic issues.
Now the SEC is unstoppable until the NCAA figures out who bought Trent Richardson his car, how many Willie Lyles there are out there
