I've been havin a hankerin for a Martini lately, and was wondering what the F&D boards' thoughts were on the perfect Martini.
Which gin?
Which vermouth?
How much (if any) olive juice?
I prefer a true martini (gin), but am open to vespas and vodka martinis as well.
(I tried searching, but all it did was pull up every thread Martini posts in, so that wasn't very helpful.)

I like Hendrick's but am also partial to Plymouth or Tanqueray.
4 to 1, gin to dry vermouth, with a smidge of orange bitters. Dolin or Martini and Rossi on the dry vermouth. Stirred 40 times with a scoop of ice. Strained into chilled glass. Either olive or lemon peel. Never both. Rinse. Repeat.

So no olive juice? Don't like it dirty?

Not particularly. I like a gin and vermouth soaked olive at the end of a martini, but not an olive juice soaked gin at the beginning of a martini.

That sounds reasonable

This is all correct.

All of his stuff sounds good, I have had a lot of luck with his prime rib recipe, his homemade pizzas sounds really good

Same for me except 86 the bitters.

I just recently started adding in Orange bitters. Fantastic results. Dont always do it, but it highlights th botanicals in the gin.

3 shots of tito vodka
2 olives(sometimes stuffed with blue cheese)
4 ice cubes.
I have recently starting having some of the traditional gin ones with a little vermouth and it is very good.

There arent many absolute truths in food and drink, but this is one.
A martini does not have vodka. If you dont have vermouth, you dont have a martini, you have a shot of alcohol.

Ok. I will just start ordering it as a shot so you can sleep better at night.

I'm with you, but it has now become a prescriptive vs. descriptive matter. I'm kind of a traditionalist, so I believe that a martini only uses gin (i.e., the prescriptive interpretation), but so many people use the term to desribe other types of drinks, that I'm afraid it's a losing battle.
I for one, will keep using the term my way, stop fighting, and just enjoy drinking them. The orange bitters suggestion in this thread is, however, intriguing, and I may very well try them in the near future.

This.
The term "martini" has really been bastardized so bad the last 5 years, I don't worry about it anymore.
I am interested in doing the bitter thing with a real gin martini now also.

Its all semantics. But no one ever orders a Whiskey Margarita or Rum Margarita, they order a Whiskey Sour or Daquiri. Yet somehow the martini has been bastardized with chocolate flavored things, vodka flavored things, and cotton candy flavored things.
