Limit on Number of Participants — Division I-A. [I-A] In Division I-A football, there shall be a limit of 105 student-athletes who may engage in practice activities prior to the institution’s first day of classes or the institution’s first contest, whichever occurs earlier
SEC - The home team may dress 95 student-athletes in uniform, but only 80 may participate. The 15 nonparticipants shall dress out at no additional cost to the institution.
Total Participants for 2011
Nebraska - 167
Bama - 138
LSU - 133
USC - 107
(These statistics report student athlete participation at the collegiate varsity level and do not reflect school club or intramural teams.

Just like their corn stalks, they are cornbread fed and everywhere.

Nebraska has this huge walk-on tradition where kids are encouraged to participate and join the football team.
That said, there's obviously a limit on how many can dress and play and even practice with the team year round...ala Rudy...and the rest collect jerseys for wash I suppose. Maybe they rotate? I don't know? But they're not allowed to have 167 players practicing with the team during the season.

yes they are. The 105 limit only applies to pre-season camp. After that any team can have as many walk ons as theyre willing to take on.

Okay.
I couldn't find a link but I guess I'll take your word for it.
So there you go, there is no limit.

Navy, Army and AF do not have limits on who can practice since everyone is on scholarship.

When you add the max. of 60 non player personnel who are allowed in the team area, it gets pretty crowded

All students at the academies have a full ride, but there are no athletic schoolys given.
