Long enough time for Ned and his crew to have traveled from the Trident to the Tower of Joy.
Long enough for all of this to have occurred actually.
quote:
“I looked for you on the Trident,” Ned said to them.
“We were not there,” Ser Gerold answered.
“Woe to the Usurper if we had been,” said Ser Oswell.
“When King's Landing fell, Ser Jaime slew your king with a golden sword, and I wondered where you were.”
“Far away,” Ser Gerold said, “or Aerys would yet sit the Iron Throne, and our false brother would burn in seven hells.”
“I came down on Storm's End to lift the siege,” Ned told them, and the Lords Tyrell and Redwyne dipped their banners, and all their knights bent the knee to pledge us fealty. I was certain you would be among them.”
“Our knees do not bend easily,” said Ser Arthur Dayne.
“Ser Willem Darry is fled to Dragonstone, with your queen and Prince Viserys. I thought you might have sailed with him.”
“Ser Willem is a good man and true,” said Ser Oswell.
“But not of the Kingsguard,” Ser Gerold pointed out. “The Kingsguard does not flee.”
“Then or now,” said Ser Arthur. He donned his helm.
Long enough for all of this to have occurred actually.

It looked like he almost had a heart attack doing the ice bucket challenge. . George knows how to make me nervous.

Easily my favorite scene from any of the books. I love listening to the audio version of this. Too bad they didn't incorporate it into the series.

Agreed. It's also the best written sequence, and I think every word is very precise in it. Even something as simple as "Ser Arthur had a sad smile on his lips" really means alot. Seeing 7 horses instead of hundreds behind him means he knows that Ned knows what he'll find there, and if I had to take a guess, he also knew that Ashara was the person who tipped off Ned. They never beat around the bush on what is up those stairs, even if they don't outright say it. It's really just a great sequence.

Well said.

has this been discussed?

Prepare for the biggest head-exploding-in-shock moment "Game of Thrones" has ever served up.
Bran Stark and Hodor reportedly won't appear in "Game of Thrones" next season. The two were a part of a major storyline from last season as they ventured beyond The Wall and met The Children.
In a recent interview with Yahoo, Kristian Nairn, who plays the silent Hodor, said that both he and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran) won't be returning for Season 5.
"We have a season off and we have a year's hiatus, solely because I imagine our storyline is up to the end of the books," he said. "So, I get my year off now to do Rave of Thrones and gallivant all over the world."
That's great that Hodor gets to keep busy DJing awesome raves, but seriously, what does this mean for "Game of Thrones"?! Dan Weiss and David Benioff couldn't have left their story at a more jarring point in Season 4.

Interesting. I wonder if they are giving the public a chance to to forget Isaac so they can re-cast the role with a younger guy. He was growing up a bit too fast.

Hopefully it's Bloodraven they want us to forget so they can redesign him.

Eh, it makes sense. Have to wait for Martin to write more, plus I get the vibe that the Dornish shite will be in every episode.
But then why is Lemoncake getting airtime this season when she didn't have that much more than Bran in her storyline at this point?

No way in hell that they're recasting Isaac.
I think it's a combination of:
1) Martin needs to finish the damn books
2) Soooo many storylines this upcoming season; particularly with The Wall, The North, King's Landing, Dorne, Riverlands (which need to be revisited and I'll be pissed if Jaime is in Dorne), Braavos, and Mereen...and who knows what is going to happen with the Iron Islands.

I was thinking that they'd use Bran's story next season to do some of the backstory that was missing, and had no idea how else they'd progress it.

Well, Littlefinger is always moving, and Sansa with him. Think they'd have to keep going with their plot, since Bran is only standing still.

True. I'm a bit disappointed that they couldn't have had Bran in just 2 or 3 episodes this season (especially for explaining backstory), but maybe D&D felt that they were having trouble fitting in all the storylines this season as it is already.
Do you think they know Martin's progress right now and feel that for season 6 (2016) that TWoW will be out by that time?

If anything leaving him off screen for a year will account for his aging if they essentially do a "time jump" with him.
But I figure it's because of the addition of Dorne and other storylines that he's getting put on a backburner.
ETA: I'm also going to say that both Sansa and Littlefinger are pretty popular characters from a TV standpoint as well. Bran not quite as much for the Hodors.

Hodors used to hate on Sansa a lot before Season 4 FWIW.
I still say GoT will have 8 seasons total.
