There just don't seem to be any possibilities of silver linings for her. She's last in line for her house's rule, she doesn't want to marry, she has a murderous rage to her that can't be satisfied, and she's training to be under a miserable existence for all time. At best she remains a Faceless Man and renounces her family completely in the end after helping save them.

Those are all pretty good points on her. I hope not though. She's the only character with a pov in every book so I hope she makes it to the end even if it's not too happy of one. I know it doesn't matter if someone is a "good guy" though

Plus Samwell finds an old account of the Last Hero slaying others with "Dragonsteel," which may be the same as Valyrian.
One thing I've wondered is if Dragonsteel is really the same thing as Valyrian steel? The Long Night should have predated Valyria by a few thousand years, and Westeros didn't even have regular steel until the Andals came. I suppose they could have made it independently, or they just mistranslated it.

I think she lives to the end and marries Gendry after killing many, many people. She then becomes Lady of Storm's End or some place similar. Or, she falls for Gendry and dies trying to save him, becoming the first GOT character to fall victim to the conspicuous cock.

dragonsteel = dragon glass = obsidian =/= valyrian steel

or...G.R.R. Martin will just have her randomly get a cold and die for no reason in Bravos before she ever does anything cool

I'll go you one step further. I don't think Arya is the type to ever have a "happy" life. Even if everything had worked out differently and Eddard had remained Lord of Winterfell or even became King of the North or King of Westeros. I just can't see her having the type of life that would be considered happy for princesses in that society.
So, yeah, I don't think she will be "happy" in the conventional sense. To me, she's more like a primal force. Were people like Alexander the Great or Timur or the head of the Inquisition happy? I don't think so. They were forces.
In Arya's case, it is compounded because she is a force of anger and death. I guess in some sense you can say she could be content in doing what it is she does. (killing people who harm or threaten to harm her family and friends). Kind of fulfilling her destiny. But yeah, I don't think she'll grow old and sit around happily telling her grandchildren stories of the great winter.

Agreed. Really the only thing that makes Arya happy is violence, vengeance, and other black sheep like herself. I think its kinda a tragedy we never got Arya and Tyrion scenes, since aside from the fact he's a Lannister, I think they would have gotten along well like he and Jon did. Heck, Tywin got along swimmingly with her in the show, and Tyrion is him in miniature form (minus some scumbags attributes). I think due to the things that make her happy, she's off to a doomed reality.
Tyrion on the other hand has had some happiness, but then it gets shut down immediately by his father or anyone else who wants to put the dwarf back in his place. If Tyrion were Hand in a time of peace and he had Tysha back, I could imagine that he could have a happy ending unlike Arya.
Posted on 5/6/13 at 8:32 pm to OMLandshark
Yeah. You can kind of see that Tyrion wants to be happy. Heck he has found his moments of happiness even in the series - whether it's whoring, pissing off the wall, messing with Lancel, playing Crevasse, etc.
And yeah, Arya does seem to have a kind of professional respect for Tywin (tv show) and Roose (book). One cold blooded killer to another.

so while we are on an arya kick...
any thoughts to the show paralleling her target practice (head, tits, balls) with joffrey's "target practice." wondering if there was a deeper darkness they were trying to portray with the similarities

My understanding is that dragonsteel is steel forged in the breath of a dragon while Valyrian steel is a process of roll forging it with the final appearance being like that of damascus steel.

There are spells that go into the forging of Valyrian steel. I think it looks like a damascus blade, but there's more to it than ordinary smithying.

Dragonsteel
When looking in the archives of the Night's Watch for a way to combat the Others Sam reads about "Dragonsteel". He and Jon think with this Valyrian Steel may be meant.[2][3]
hmmmmmmm

In the Last Hero version, "his sword froze so hard the blade snapped when he tried to use it," and then something happens with the children of the forrest that hasn't been revealed in the books, and then he ends up slaying others with a "Dragonsteel" blade.
With AA, the blade breaks in water, and in the lion, and then it takes Nissa Nissa to turn it into Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes.
The North version and the Asshai version both involve:
1. sword breaks
2. stuff happens
3. New sword that slays Others
Not really sure where I'm going with this, just thought it was interesting.
I'm leaning towards thinking that we're past step 1 (with Ice being "broken"), now its just a matter of time before the sword gets fixed and the Other slaying begins.

What about Blackfyre?
My bet that the blade will make it's way to Dany somehow...

Ah yeah that makes sense.

An interesting thought emerged while reading about the named swords...
A thought. Not a theory.
Ice is said to have been aquired by House Stark
About 100 years before Aegon's Landing. This is way after the Long Night, Age of Heroes, War for the Dawn, etc.
Brightroar is "the ancient Valyrian Greatsword of House Lannister" and we know it was lost with King Tommen II when he never returned from a quest to Valyria, and Geron Lannister led another doomed expedition to find it. but...it's intersting to note that Tommen II was King of the Rock when he vanished, so its safe to say Brightroar was lost before Aegon's Landing (give or take 100 years) and since nothing is mentioned about when it was aquired by House Lannister, it's possible Brightroar is much older than Ice...
Or I should say, the Lannisters had their Valyrian Steel Greatsword way before House Stark aquired Ice. In fact, it's possible Brightroar was lost...before Ice was found.
Did Tywin actually Steel anything at all?
ETA: I meant 100 years before Aegon's Landing, which was 400 yrs before Robert's Rebellion.
