Well he killed Ser Kevan for starters,
Completely forgot about that. All of these posts about varys had me scratching my head bc I couldn't remember a damn thing he has done in the last 2 books.

He helped Tyrion escape then *poof*
I think you have a valid point-he totally disappeared until Kevan's assassignation. Is he sighted at all between the two scenes?
Shiner...you look dehydrated.

Either Varys thought Tyrion was important enough to save that he could sacrifice his position in the small council, or it was time to leave anyway.

I don't think Varys was fixed on leaving town himself after the escape, but once Tyrion but a bolt through Tywin's guts - exit stage left.

I think he was counting on Tyrion helping Aegon, plus he knows how to train dragons. I think he used Tyrion to make sure the dragons made it there in the first place.

Varys made no effort to stop Tyrion. He wanted Tyrion to kill Tywin. I think Varys was planning on killing Tywin off soon anyway, and having Tyrion do it was just gravy for him.

Don't give Varys too much credit in the way of controlling events. What makes him so dangerous is his ability to adapt fluid-like in a heartbeat.
I have no doubt he had numerous exit strategies for his retreat from K's L, but I seriously doubt he intended to have himself disappear simultaneously with Tyrion, and the Black Cell jailer.
Doesn't sound like a plan he would make at all.

Jamie forced his hand. I do think Varys told Jamie to tell Tyrion whatever he felt was necessary to tell him knowing that this was probably the last time they would see each other. Varys probably knew of Tysha.

I'm pretty sure Varys winged that within an hour since Jaime forced him to. It wasn't well thought out, and it wasn't in Varys intention to flee, but he does what he does best and makes lemonade out of lemons. No reason for him to tell Tyrion how to get to his father's chambers unless he wanted Tyrion to kill Tywin. He could have easily withheld that information if he wanted to stick around on the council.

Varys is the black cell jailer
Not sure why that's funny? It may be a red herring but its where Martin is leading us, I think.
And Shark-your whole last post- we are on the same page. I'm torn as to how much validity I can give this, but Ill concede Varys may well have intended to lead Tyrion to murder Tywin. With the pending arrival of Aegon in Westeros, it may have been the right time for Varys's exit or lengthy leave of absence at least.
I need to re-read Tyrion's escape for sure.

As I said, it wasn't really a plan at all. Jaime forced his hand, and he definitely didn't see that coming. He wasn't left with any other choice.

If Arya didn't escape King's Landing, what do you think Cersei and especially Joffrey would do with her? Would Cersei treat her like a lady, or throw her in the dungeon? It wouldn't shock me if Joffrey snapped one day and decided to kill her in front of the court, or if Arya was killed by one of the Kingsguard when she tries to kill Joffrey herself. If Joffrey treated Sansa as bad as he did who is just a sweet girl, there's no telling what he would do to Arya.

I think she would have caused havoc in the tunnels and turned the battle for Kings Landing for Stannis showing them the path to the heart of the city...
Or worse she would have discovered the stash of wild fire; letting it loose and burning King's Landing to the ground...

I fail to see how this would be a negative outcome.....

A dead horse at this point cuz we both agree, but I did re-read the escape chapter in 'Swords, and am officially changing my position
...Varys not only didn't stop him, but told him when they reached the point in the dark passages right below the Tower of the Hand, volunteered that Tywin was in Tyrion's old bedroom, gave him precise directions (exact number of rungs to climb, paces to the hidden door thru the hearth, no less , knowing Tyrion would find Shea there), and then Varys gives this Brere Rabbit routine (just PLEAsE don't throw me in that briar patch!) about folly and throwing both of their lives away once Tyrion starts to climb.
Then the nail in the coffin - the three weapons hanging on the wall in the bedchamber: a pole axe (too long/too awkward for a dwarf) a mace (too high to reach) and the crossbow, underneath which:
"...a wood and iron chest had been pushed against the wall."
It was planned after all, and by Varys. I'm convinced now.

This is the best analysis of Varys and Littlefinger's schemes, which I think are one of, if not the most important parts of the book. I know it's long, but it's good. SIAP
