Greek yogurt...is there really that much of a difference?

I probably eat yogurt almost every day (either for breakfast, or at lunch [McDonald's fruit and yogurt parfait is pretty damned tasty BTW]), but it's "regular" yogurt (Yoplait, Dannon [but not the shite yogurt - Activia]).
All of a sudden, at least based on the advertising, Greek yogurt is apparently the greatest thing since the multiple orgasm. For those that have tried both, is there that much of a difference? Is it taste, or texture, or both?
If there is such a difference, which brands do you recommend?
TIA

for me, its the higher protein content

I recently tried some and there is a difference. Plain regular yogurt is kind of plain, plain Greek yogurt reminded me a lot of sour cream both in flavor and being thicker.

This is why I eat it.
The taste is kind of tart, but it's much more healthy than the crap that you have been putting in your body under the guise of "health food".

I find the best flavor to be oikos' vanilla, not as tart as some of the fruit flavors

True
But perhaps Greek yogurt isn't health food either

I use it as a milk substitut in my smoothies, or to add protein to oatmeal in the morning.
It's not perfect, but at least it's not all sugar.

I never heard of Greek yogurt until my wife brough home a tub of it a week or so ago. I think your description is right on. It took a little getting used to but I mix it with some berries and it tastes alright.

I would say it is safe to say it is probably a better alternative than other plain yogurt or sour cream at the least

Depending on which you choose, it can be a lot less sugar and a lot more protein. I like to add my own fresh fruit and sometimes add almonds or flax seed oil. Sometimes this is lunch. It can be very filling.
I've been eating Fage(pronounced Fa-yay) ever since it came out and way before the Greek yogurt faze. I knew it was good by looking at the nutrition content. I like 0% and 2%.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised at the similarity to sour cream. It would definitely work as a healthier base to dips.

Greek yogurt seems to me to be more savory/salty than what people usually think of yogurt

put oikos vnailla in the freezer for 45 minutes or so prior to eating. tastes like ice cream.
i eat oikos plain. no fat, i think 15g protein. chop up half an orange or some strawberries for flavor. i can even eat it by itself, i have developed a taste for it.

Greek yogurt is thicker, higher protein, and much more tart if you get it plain.
Honey cuts through the tartness very nicely. In face, for dessert, I'll often eat greek yogurt with honey and blueberries.

My go-to breakfast. 1 cup of plain 2% GY, handful of blueberries and just a drizzle of honey. Get the day started right.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot, but I while I like sour cream, I have to say the comparison is a little un-nerving.

like others have said, if it's too tart, add some honey

We make our own yogurt, it tastes a lot like the Greek stuff. A lot of the water is removed from the store bought, that's what makes it thick.

Thicker and more protien....mainly the thicker texture though.

Greek yogurt is greatness. Full of protein and tastes good. It comes in all kinds of flavors so unless you are making a smoothie with it, why would you eat the plain? Opt for the vanilla.
