I just don't understand why the death penalty or anything close to that would be deserving.
I'm not taking anything away from the hideous things that happened but the criminal is behind bars, the coach is dead, and the rest of the staff and administration has been long gone.
So who are they going to be punishing exactly? The new coach that had nothing to do with it, the current players who had nothing to do with it, and the fans who had nothing to do with it?

I bet they lose 2 or 3 scholarships for the next two years, and will probably have a "self imposed" bowl ban for the next two years.
Then...business as usual.

My reaction was referring to your analogy.
And like I said earlier, regardless of what they decide to do it is way too early to penalize them IMO. I guess they want to act before the season start?
They should wait a little more if they want to do anything because this seems a little too rushed to me and more reactionary than anything.

This line of thinking makes no sense. Almost always, the consequences don't affect those already gone. If you look at it that way, then no punishment can ever be handed down for anything. Read the PSU message boards right now. It's disgusting the culture that's been instituted at that school.
Also, the NCAA is not a court of law. It doesn't need "due process".

The thread title and link suggest otherwise. PSU is facing unprecedented civil suits as the NFL punishing Saints players for their exposure in the concussion lawsuits. The NCAA is distancing themselves from PSU so that they are not named in lawsuits from the victims, IMO.

The harshest smackdown is the death penalty. It's actually been given out 5 times

Right, which implies that they may ban the entire athletic department for a year or more.

I heard some ignorant student shouting yesterday, "he told his superiors". How far up your own arse must your head be to actually believe that Joe Pa had any superiors at Penn St? We all know how in a small town the local high school coach knows everything that is going on with his football players. Does anyone really believe that a college football coach of 60 years at one school didn't know of every single reported incident of Jerry Sandusky? Nick Saban told the LSU administration to stay the frick out of his way, and he was only here for 5 years. Joe Pa was there for over 60 years!

death penalty for a decade?
I was thinking 5 years. But you may be right. It looks like the longest before this was 3 years.
Were the penalties involving SMU/others open ended or for a fixed amount of years? If "Unprecedented", that would mean at least 4 years correct?
Edit: I was thinking football and not all the other athletic programs, so who knows what will happen.

Perhaps they feel, as I do, that the entire culture, attitude, and way of doing things at Penn State is so fricked that there's no hope for rehabilitation; the entire system just needs to be burned. I'd equate it to denazification and the concept of collective guilt.
Some ppl are still delusional, but most of that died with Paterno

That wasn't NCAA imposed.
And I think that Penn State should have gone the self-imposed route.

Same thing I was thinking.
Members of the football staff were basically taking part/covering up some of the most heinous crimes possible. I have no problems with sanctions being delivered to the program.
If it were up to me, I would put heavy penalties on all athletic programs in order force the University to get rid of every single staff member in the Athletic Department. Once the AD is cleared out, I listen to an appeal and substantially reduce the penalties.

This is the line of thinking that makes no sense. The concept of due process has its roots in formal logic. ALL organizations should follow logical thinking.
As sports fans, we should urge all governing bodies to work logically instead of as dictators.
