So, with snapper season closing and Amberjack yet to open, I'm thinking outside of our normal box for fish to target during the Tarpon Rodeo. I've never before fished the grass lines for dolphin and I want to give it a try.

Do you need a solid line or is patchy grass okay?

Do you look for any type of bait or birds around the grass to indicate fish below?

Favorite baits? Plugs, jigs, etc?

Any info would be helpful.

I would love to catch one, but only to release it. Not something I would spend a lot of effort targeting, though. In all my years, I have only seen one certain tarpon while fishing.

The most I have ever caught in one place was under a piece of plywood that obviuosly fell off a ship. It had to be part of some sort of shipping container. The plywood was roughly 20'X40' floating in the gulf. We pulled up just to see what it was and could see the fished stacked under it just waiting for a hook.

Man, we passed about a 12 foot long 4X12 beam in a grass line this past weekend but the captain kept rolling past it. Everyone was red snapper obsessed with the short seasons.

On a side note, it would suck hard to hit that big thing in the water.

I was referring to tarpon rodeo. I'm way to intoxicated the whole time to fish. We only fish on Friday and party the rest of the weekend.

I've only caught Mahi in Costa Rica, but have seen a bunch on some grass lines out of Coco. The Pelagics love the grass and should be there even without such a dense line. It's an absolutely beautiful sight to see them glowing under the boat. I've used poppers and jigs in the past, but I'm sure someone else can chime in on specifics.

I'm a grown man and can party whenever I want. When I go to the coast, I'm fishing. We will have women to entertain for that weekend, though.

anything in the water. grass, a 5 gal bucket anything!!!! pull up to it throw some chum in and get ready for a show. the bait will come out from under the grass and then the dolphin see this so they come out. put a piece of chum on you hook and free line it till they hit it. also you can pull baits. anything small and pink on top works best. pulling baits will get u a better chance at catchin a bull. good luck!

o and make sure they have taken the bait and are swimming away from you when chunking or they will throw the hook. also get a bucket and dont let them hit the boat or it will look like someone stuck a pig in your boat. the bucket also makes them stop shaking they calm down pretty quickly when in bucket. helps on opening the fish box also once bucket is full dump into chest

We hooked up on 2 cows the other day on a tie off bouy.

Last week caught a nice one on a rip.

Always check anything floating and if there are chickens be watching for a bull
