re: Carmelo Anthony calls Jeremy Lin's contract "ridiculous" (J.R. Smith chimes in)

Let's look at the exact statement that is quoted in the article:
Perhaps he was saying that he didn't feel that 15-20 games was enough to merit the contract.
quote:
At comments from Team USA practice Sunday morning, Anthony told reporters a throw-away comment. From Sporting News (a lot of reporters snagged the quote):
Anthony said Saturday that he wanted Lin to remain his teammate. But he followed that up with this remark on Sunday: “It’s up to the organization to say that they want to match that ridiculous contract.”
Perhaps he was saying that he didn't feel that 15-20 games was enough to merit the contract.

that's what i'm saying.. i don't agree with players hating on other player's contracts.. but hey they are entitled their opinions and the right to express it
And that right to express their opinion does not exempt them from criticism.

I don't think he's an elite player. He's an elite offensive player

Ridiculous that the rockets structured it so the Knicks would take a huge cap hit if they tried to match it? Sounds like the rockets just know how to get what they want.
Sounds like he's just mad someone other than him on his team is being talked about.
He's an idiot. Always has been always will be...and it's nice to know that he'll never win anything.

The Union allows teams to structure contracts this way to give RFAs some leverage. I think its good that Lin agreed to it and used some of what limited power he has. The Knicks see it as a betrayal and will play it up that way.
It's funny to see Anthony say something, especially about contract negotiations when he the one (the first one) to force his team to trade him. In my book, he loses the ability to ever comment on someone elses contracts or their choice of teams.

well if this is true...
quote:
Writes Berman, “The Knicks were bitter because they told Lin immediately the club would match the original offer and Lin apparently shared the information with the Rockets. Lin and Houston then plotted to redo it. Lin secretly flew into Las Vegas without informing the Knicks to renegotiate the contract and sign it.”
... it does seem like a bit of a betrayal. unless I'm misunderstanding, the re-done deal was the same money only moved around for the poison pill. so why do that to the Knicks unless he wanted to leave? seems like he was saying his heart was in Houston.

Exactly. The Knicks can bitch all they want. They are the ones that dropped the ball.

at this rate it sounds like everyone's contract is killing the knicks

The first deal was four years for $28 million, this deal is 3 years for $25 million.

Melo makes more, why should he care? Jeremy Lin's contract might be ridiculous for Houston but for NY it's perfectly fine. you have to overpay for the cost of living

ok, it was different, but basically not a big difference on the avg, or the total money. so what exactly did he want from the Knicks? what did he have to gain from doing the poison pill deal except basically saying he wanted out?

Knicks contracts are OOC.

You're joking, I hope.
Anyway, the contract is ridiculous because it is a poison pill contract that would hamper the Knicks if they choose to match it. In other words, it's MEANT to be ridiculous so that the Rockets can maximize their chances of getting the guy they want.
At the end of the day, there's nothing to see here. Some reporters decided to make a big deal out of what should be a non-story when Anthony made a truthful statement.
