Man i am just so disappointed in the way that ended fir Adam. I don't know if he would have beat Ernie in a playoff had he made that last putt.
Adam is the best ball striker on tour, but the putting has always held him back. It looked like he was finally getting used to that damn long putter, but it did him in in the end.

I agree. Golf needs it, cause if Tiger and Phil ain't around these days, ain't too many folks watching. Bubba and Rory could emerge as those types of stars but "could" is the operative word.
Ernie's 4 majors ties him with Phil. I think something like only 18 players in history have won as many.
Both are dwarfed in their time by Tiger's shadow and for the most part they were unable to be a true disruptive rival to Tiger as say Trevino, Player and Watson were to Jack. But they did rise above some of the bigger name rivals of Jack's era like Weiskoff and Miller and have carved out a nice legacy.

This win is absolutely huge for Ernie's legacy, and I can't even imagine how much it means to him. Hats off to the Big Easy.

Ernie Els still has plenty of game.... minus the putter. I cringe every time I see him over a 5-6 footer. The guy has been playing his butt off for the last year, but he just can't make the putts.
Ernie shaking the haters off (me). 4 birdies on the back 9 to bring home the trophy.
(and a little bit of help from Adam Scott)

nice for Phil, Ernie, and almost there for Vijay
I was curious so I went back and looked up how many majors the older stars (esp from 60s-80s) had won
Jack Nicklaus - 18
Gary Player - 9
Tom Watson - 8
Arnold Palmer - 7
Lee Trevino - 6

So Tiger doesn't win a major that he wasn't leading after Saturday. That's nothing new. Old Tiger never did that. This weekend doesn't do much for either the he's back or he's done crowd, although I think finishing 3rd is a pretty big positive for him.
Although he's never won after trailing after Saturday I do think old Tiger would have had a great change of getting the win today.

The thing that always stood out to me in this comparison was that the best players of Nicklaus's era..ie.e the ones you listed played some of their best golf in majors to beat Nicklaus. There's a reason Jack has 19 second place finishes in majors and it wasn't him not playing good golf in all of those.
The better players of Tiger's era seemed to cower if they were right there with Tiger in the majors. That's why I've always equated Phil, Ernie, Vijay, Goosen, Duval et. al more with Miller, Hubert Green and Weiskoff than those mentioned above.
Though Ernie and Phil aren't at that level they have exceeded the Weiskoff/Miller/Green level and that's pretty darn good.

Even the Tiger fans have to admit that it is shocking that of his 70-something wins, only 5 of them has he trailed coming into Sunday. That is just unbelievable that Tiger almost never makes a Sunday charge... in any tournament.

I was playing today and was pretty shocked to hear that Ernie won it when we made the turn. Ernie's a class act guy with a great swing. Sorry for Adam Scott, but congratulations, to the Big Easy!

I'm sure it's been mentioned-but another major win for a long putter. The grumbles are growing louder I think ....

Els was around 75th in putting. Adam Scott missed some short ones coming in...
Such a dumb argument
