I was born an raised here in good ole Louisiana, still live and work here, received an undergrad from LSU, an undergrad degree from UNO, and an upper level degree from Penn State.
And I have to say that what I've seen posted here is some of the biggest hypocritical, pot calling the kettle black nonsense I've seen in a long time. Plenty of PSU students and alumni have some strange fascination with JoePa and I agree that it can be strange, but have you ever been to the Tiger Rant or LSU campus grounds on game day? It's no less cult like than some of the crazy attachment people have with JoePa. Anyone that says otherwise is delusional and probably part of the LSU cult.
And this is a huge sickening story so of course wackos are going to make the news. They need to just remove the statue and get it over with. It's time for the university to move forward without JoePa, push the agenda of the victim's healing, and show how they are going to prevent this from happening again.
+1. I know this isn't exactly a forum that is going to display well thought out arguments, but some of the shite people have posted over the past few days is beyond ignorant. It seems like some posters are bending over backwards to show how against child molestation they are. Guess what? Everyone is against it. But evidently that doesnt go far enough. You see posts like "Death penalty? They should burn the whole fricking school to the ground" and "anyone who supports Joe Paterno is just as bad as Sandusky."
The articles have said that the statue is staying up FOR NOW. I would be surprised if it stays up for good. I would guess they will give people in the community time to argue their points for why it should/ shouldn't come down. Like it or not, Paterno was a huge part of that community for a long time. I don't think he deserves anyone's respect but I don't know that the world is going to end because the statue hasn't come down three days after the Freeh report.

Well I wouldn't go that far but I see what you're saying

The only other college that comes close to Penn State as far as coach worship is Alabama with Bear Bryant (and Saban's getting close as well). I think that Miles legacy isn't big enough yet, nor is Chizik's, to warrant this level of defensiveness.
Good point. All I'm trying to say is the JoePa was PSU football for so ling that it's going to take time for this report to sink in and they accept it. The wacky fans will never change their mind but most will begin to accept the situation and the university will slowly begin the process of removing him from campus.

Yeah...the hyperbole and indignation is par for the course when it comes to mass mob reaction...it turns into a contest over who is more outraged and upset...and then the over-the-top becomes the norm and anything less than crazy-talk makes you an ignorant apologist..."tear down the stadium and never play football again...no football, good-bye all sports and Title IX. Burn it all to the ground...the whole University!"
Ah, feel better now.

Reminds me of Arkansas fans when Petrino got caught. The spin and delusion is just sad.
Arkansas is my backup option because I grew up there, spend a lot of time on their boards, a lot of fans turned on him when the lying was discovered.
Besides, there's not any comparison between a dumbass fricking around and hiring somebody he's fricking and pure evil.
Besides #2, Bill Clinton literally shot his wad on a 25 year old that was an underling (granted by about 15 layers probably) in the Oval Office and half the fricking country still thinks he is a "great man".
A large swath of the population is basically fricked when it comes to having any sort of moral compass. Another large swath has been beaten into submission into thinking standing for anything is being "judgmental".

How is he any better? He protected him so he could keep doing it.
Well one reason that he is "better" than Sandusky is that he didn't spend his time building trust with kids, taking them places, then raping them repeatedly.
Paterno would rightfully (IMO) be going to jail if he were still alive because he turned a blind eye to the 1 and possibly 2 situations that he knew about. I think it is pretty unlikely that he knew about all of Sandusky's actions or even the full details of the rape(s) he covered up. Of course, he still deserved to go to jail and should be getting the criticism that has come his way. But his crime is not in the same ballpark as what Sandusky did and (again, IMO) to state that they are the same is willful ignorance.

You should really try to understand you own bias.Maybe that's why you have such faith in the PSU students, alums, and faculty. To most people not connected to the university, they're all members of a particularly disgusting cult.

I thin your own bias fails to realize that a lot of schools in the SEC and other places would be just like this...you just don't want to acknowledge it...you're in denial like some PSU faithful.
The SEC ain't the most rabid fanbase in the country because they whistle Dixie when the media attacks and disparages their football heritage and the NCAA comes to punish their football programs.

My posts have been for the most part civil and well thought out, but look at some of the responses to me. It's like a contest to see who can be more outraged and over the top. Let's drop a tactical nuke on University Park right now!

I have no doubt the statue is coming down, as it should. PSU is moving slowly because of the wacky fans and trying to avoid mass chaos. This is calculated responses by the university. The Freeh report just came out and it's going to take time for people to fully comprehend the magnitude if the report.

Bama is the only one that might do this. Also, your defense of shitty behavior is "hey, other people would do it too" That's pretty fricking weak

I can easily see the Rant in full defense-mode over the last 9 months if it happened to LSU...or the SEC Rant - Bama, Auburn, Arkansas...it would be apologist central.
Bull. Half of the LSU fans were calling for Miles' head on 2 occasions during his tenure for his clock mismanagement and choice of QBs.
Something like pedophilia from a protected assistant coach would have set the whole fanbase against him.

I completely disagree. LSU fans want to fire their coach after every single loss. Penn State students RIOTED when their coach was fired after a horrific scandal. Huge difference in cultures.
It may be comforting to Penn State folks to say that every other football school is the same, but they're wrong. Penn State was a unique situation in the world of college football.
Most big football schools have an identity and culture outside of football. Penn State's identity and culture revolved completely around football, and specifically around St. Joe. Not many of us can relate to that.

Because they are passionate about the football program and firing a coach has hopes of hiring a better coach.
This isn't just the coaches - it's about the whole program...and it's all about passion.
If LSU were facing anything like this that would destroy their football program and overall legacy - they would DEFEND IT TO THE DEATH!
They would say, gee...we hate what Les did - but we can't let it and the media bring down our entire program...we have to defend it somehow.

JoePa was with PSU in some sort if coaching capacity for nearly 61 years. That's not a typo. If Les Miles was solidified as LSU's coach for that amount if time, you would be seeing similar results. I'm in a very unique position in this argument. LSU fans are just as crazy but Les Miles doesn't have the same following because he hasn't been the only coach the schools had for half a century.
The only safe comparison would be if this happened to Bear Bryant and you would see similar responses. LSU just doesn't have the same established relationship with Les Miles, but our fans (LSU ) are no less idiotic or delusional.
