Man,I'm old. I know at first glance "8-3-1" in the media guide isn't that big of a deal. But LSU had slopped around for several years and 1981 was just flat out putrid. The beatings at the time in Gainesville and Birmingham of Florida and Alabama were just awesome.

Its Friday, I really don't want to do any work. Any other old guy up for some '82 memories?

And then we flushed them down the toilet by losing to state and Tulane.

We just couldn't handle John Bond and Miss State.Still, shouldn't have mattered but State had been without a lot of starters most of the year. They played Georgia within a TD earlier that season. State had played in bowls in '80 and '81 and was really healthy for the first time since earlier that year.

Now, for Tulane.

The great Willie Gault 100 yd TD vs Tenn. was particularly maddening and forced that tie! Remember was the fastest 100 yd return I ever heard at the time!

That was indeed a very memorable year. Lots of ups but some VERY disappointing lows, i.e. losing to MSU and Tulane were as low as I've been as a Tiger fan. However the highs were unbelievable as well. Beating the Bear for the first time in 12 years was huge, taking out highly ranked UF on the road and dismantling Bowden's FSU for the right to go to the Orange Bowl were intoxicating.

There wasn't one orange at a grocery store in EBR by 6:00 that night. Unbelieveable how it evidently never dawned on LSU game officials that people would bring in oranges. I remember in line in the student section and people had them in the little mesh bags waiting to waltz in.

I was able to attend the Oregon State, Tennessee and Tulane games that year, so they went 1-1-1 on my watch. But, I was pretty young at the time, 12 years old, and particularly remember the Baton Rouge station doing a montage about the season after the great FSU win to the tune of "Up Where We Belong." Particularly memorable for me also was seeing the first game of the Dalton-James Gang, where they both went over 100 yards in their first games as freshmen.

GREAT defense, the MSU game and Tulane made me dislike Pete jenkins big time, but realize other love him....d line was not prepared for those games, but wow was it a fun season!!!
screen pass and run by Dalton vs UF, hit on fsu qb by melancon, defense vs bama, scored on first play vs ole miss,

The Dalton-James Gang, Eric Martin, Leonard Marshall, Rydell Meloncon...great players on that team. That team realistically could have gone undefeated. Upset by State and Tulane by a combined 5 points, tied Tennessee because of Gault's 100 yard ko return late, and lost to Nebraska by 1 point after having a 10 point lead in the Orange Bowl. The eventual national champion, Penn State, was manhandled by the same Alabama team we whipped...in Birmingham. Still was a special year.

a record that probably won't be matched anytime soon. Hilliard had 133 yds and James' 128.

We had to score in the last minute to beat Oregon State in '81. This was a beat down. They were coached by Joe Avazanno, the guy who was Johnson's special teams' coach at Dallas who recently passed away.

I saw my first game in Tiger Stadium that fall. It was the Florida State game where the students threw oranges on the field at the end of the game. I also remember an eerie fog that rolled in about the third quarter and a drunk old coonass walking around with a fifth of Jack Daniels drunk as a skunk right behind us. Great memories.

Road trips to BAMA's and FL were spectacular with our monstrous D lead by Lenny Marshal up front and the O against FL with the Dalton -James Gang leading the way. Those 2 freshman RBs made a huge difference to that team improving so much from the year before. Also Echo was a transfer for 1year at DE and a beast.

The upsets by Miss St and Tulane were maddening. It took away from this team being considered one of the very all time best at LSU.

That was a team that was better than its record. Losses were close games to State (John Bond), Tulane (letdown from FSU win), and by one point to a powerhouse Nebraska team. Even so, the success was much welcomed after some mostly bad years, and the team really did accomplish a lot by skinning the Bear for the first time since 1969 (I think), whipping FSU, and securing a major bowl berth. Unfortunately, for me, my dad had gotten transferred and I was able to see precious little of the '82 season due to the paucity of coverage back then. Lots of time in the van, straining to hear the feed from WWL or that big S'port station.

One classic that season was the Ole Miss game. This was pretty much in the twilight of when this game had a lot of fan intensity.

Game was the week before the Alabama game and Ole Miss had just lost for the second year in a row to Vanderbilt so there was concern of a letdown. For some odd reason Ole Miss talked a lot of garbage in the papers leading up to the game.

I'll never forget the whole Ole Miss team coming out to midfield for the coin toss. When they won the toss there was a brief scuffle at midfield, but boy, Ole Miss was READY !!!

They received and got hit around the 25 and fumbled.Hilliard scored on the first play from scrimmage. Halftime score was 31-0. 45-0 at the end of 3. 45-8 final. Ole Miss had --50 yards rushing (that's MINUS 50) for the game.

I graduated from the same High School as Ramsey Dar Dar. He was on that team and out played Nebraska's all-american center (Remington?)in that Orange Bowl. The thing I remember most about that season was wondering "What if?". Bo Rein and/or Bill Arnsparger would have won it all with that team.

I remember Jim Naysium and WFMF getting score predictions before the Tulane game. Mike Mcarthy in the afternoon drive saying, "LSU is going crush, kill, maul, destroy Tulane."

Nobody had any ANY doubt we'd kill Tulane on the way to the Orange Bowl.

Classic big game let down after the FSU magic.

Great season, ended on kind of a downer losing to Tulane, in Tiger Stadium (it was the last time Tulane beat LSU. Lots of talent on that team.

Orange Bowl gets a big over looked, but that lose to Nebraska is kinda like the the 79 USC game. We were just not at their level then.
