Who is going to be our next head football coach?
Current Coach: none
Time left on Contract: n/a
Current Record: 4-8 Next Game: Sept. 2013
The Candidates:
Armani Ronnie Tier (the not a prayer tier)
Jon Gruden -- Current head of the FFCA, Monday Night Football color analyst. +'s are that he's a well respected offensive coach and QB guru. -'s are he hasn't coached in college in many years and is unknown how in tune he would be with the current recruiting landscape. Many Arkansas fans are praying that the university can attract a big name that will make waves and take the football team to the mountaintop.
Bobby Petrino -- Currently disgraced former Arkansas head coach who made remarkably bad and unprofessional decisions leading to his firing with cause. +'s He's CBMFP. -'s He's CBMFP. Many Arkansas fans are praying that we just re-hire the man at a cut salary with tough stipulations.
Butch Davis -- Current advisor for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Former coach of the Miami Hurricanes, Cleveland Browns, and most recently North Carolina Tarheels. Davis is a former Arkansas player. +'s He is a great recruiter when he has NFL agents runner's working for him, is a defensive minded coach, has some panache that should help with recruiting. -'s He brings baggage from past coaching stops, he's got big money boosters backing him along with a certain Springdale church. He could be as devisive as Houston Nutt if things don't go well. Arkansas fans at Springdale First Baptist are praying that their preacher can get more sway so Gus will be brought in as coach soon.
Legit tier
Art Briles -- Current Baylor head coach. Career record of 63-58. Briles has been removed from the LeGit tier. I believe Baylor's commitment to new facilities has gotten a long term commit from Briles.
Pat Fitzgerald -- Current head coach of Northwestern. An All-American LB, and one of the youngest head coaches in NCAA Div. 1 football. Career Record 47-39. Fitzgerald has done a very good job at Northwestern and has them trending upwards and competitive in the Big 10. +'s Young, energetic coach that has a bright future, doing more with less. -'s Has no real connection with the south, has a limited network in the profession, may have a hard time putting together a top staff. May not be ready for primetime that is the SEC. Fitzgerald only makes $800K at Northwestern so a $2MM contract would be a huge boost, but being an alum of Northwestern he might not be willing to ever leave.
Chris Petersen -- Current Head Coach at Boise St. Career Record 81-8. Arkansas has a history of hiring Boise St. coaches and they never should have hired that one. Petersen is everything you could ask for in a HC. Has proven himself time and time again on the big stage. Has taken Boise St. to ridiculously high levels. Arkansas could double his salary and give him resources he could only dream of at Boise St. +'s awesome in game coach, great coach of fundamentals, offensively minded, stoic family man. -'s Coached in a weak conference inflating his teams record and reputation. Could be another Boise bust that can't handle competing in the big boy conferences. Petersen would be the first serious call I would make if I were AD.
Charlie Strong -- Current head coach at Louisville. Career Record 23-13. Strong is a well thought of coach who is a great defensive coach and terrific recruiter. He's an Arkansas native without Razorback ties. I'm removing Strong from the Legit tier. I don't think he is emotionally connected to the U. of Arkansas at all, and will likely stay and build Louisville while he waits on S. Carolina.
Mike Gundy -- Current Head Coach at Oklahoma State. Current record 65-33. Gundy is presumed to be a lifer at OSU, but the dickwad AD Mike Holder refuses to give him a contract that ensures it, while giving a shite-tastic basketball coach a huge 10 year contract. +'s Gundy is a former QB that develops the position, and hires innovative OC's. He's a player coach yet is still a tough disciplinarian. Very passionate and emotional, obvious that he's invested in the players individually and gives his all to the program. -'s He just got a contract extension in Stillwater, so the wandering eye might not stop in Fayetteville. His defenses have been mighty pourus but their ability to create turnovers has made them into a very successful team. Turnovers may not comes as easy in the SEC. Arkansas fan base might not love him at first, but he's everything they want in a coach.
Space reserved for Gary Patterson.

When talking about the Criteria for the new Head Coach, Jeff long had this to say
"Well, I don't have an order but I will tell you that obviously we've got...this is, as we continue to say it - the most competitive conference. We've got to have a tough hard-nose coach who can deal with the battles. The battles that occur on the field, the battles that occur in recruiting. Obviously, we want honesty and integrity. Those are basics you look for in any of our coaches.
We want one that's student-athlete centered. One that looks at our student-athletes and understands, not just that winning in football is important, but all of what this does for the individual in our program. I've always believed that if you take care of those student-athletes, you instill in them those qualities that only athletics can do and then you build that into your football program and you take all of those elements that help develop the person to be the best person they can be -- they'll be the best athlete they can be. So you know, we need a football coach that understands that.
I think we need to have one that has a forward looking approach, a positive looking approach -- because again -- it's easy to come in here and come up with all the reasons why Arkansas can't be successful. You know, that's easy. You can do that at every every school. We need somebody to look at, no, here's why we can win a national championship at Arkansas. There are many reasons why, positive reasons why we can. So...but you know that's the kind of leader. You know, has to be a leader. Has to be a strong leader. Somebody that understands the role of a head coach at this institution, at this state and accepts that's responsibility. It's a huge responsibility.
But I also think that because of all we've done to build our program whether it be facilities, whether it be our academic support program, whether it be our fundraising, whether it be our stadium, the new football center -- all those things have put us in position to attract a high quality head coach.
I was impressed with the number of people who reached out initially. Most of those were people that were interested in the job at the end of the season because it was a unique time, an unusual time with no spring football practice -- that most people weren't interested in engaging us at that time. But you know, I think we'll have a depth of talent interested in this job and we'll see as the process unfolds, who will eventually be our head football coach."

I had no idea Arky fans feel this way. I mean I know you can't just assume that because they're brothers they're same skill as head coaches but I figured Arky fans might be more open to that option?

Not sure I would put Charlie Strong with some of those names you put him with. JMO.

Agreed. There is a 0% chance that happens.
Strong needs to be swapped out for Petersen in the legit group.

If Tennessee hired Petrino while Bray, Rogers, Patterson, and Hunter returned for senior seasons...

It'll be interesting to see what happens after this season. The Big East is complete shite and there's no reason they can't make a solid run with Bridgewater at QB under him.
Something else that'll come into play with him is that Pitino has been very open about not wanting Louisville to move from the Big East because he wants the school to stay in a "basketball league". Their AD seems to be in line with that. I figure Strong jumps ship now that auto-bids are out the window and the Big East is going to get shut out.

I read that if your current head coach wins the Natinal Championship you would keep him.
Therefore should he be on the list?
PS - he may be on the list but the op was too long do I did not read it.

The reason it's called the 'horseshite tier' isn't a judgement about the quality of coach so and so may be. It's called such because there will be a huge amount of horseshite put out there regarding these coaches and the Arkansas job and none of them really have a chance at getting the gig.
Charlie Strong is an interesting candidate, but people keep going back to he's a native... well in Arkansas you don't have to be from here to recruit local kids to tFLAGSHIP. We are looking coast to coast, looking for a BP clone without all the baggage, we want someone with NFL credentials so we can sell that. I think Strong is a fine candidate, but he's not getting this job this time around.
Paul Petrino needs to prove he can run a program from top to bottom. We want a winner, and you can't prove yourself until you have to. This fall will be a good resume builder for him. He's not getting the job.
